Nissan Nismo Brand – A New Era [w/video]

Nissan Nismo Brand – A New Era [w/video]

The biggest news for us this week was Nissans confirmation of Nismo as Nissan’s exclusive global performance road car and motorsport brand and the official opening of the new Nismo global headquarters and development centre in Yokohama Japan.

Nismo is already well-known to motorsports and performance car enthusiasts in Japan and to millions of global gaming enthusiasts.

In a special ceremony yesterday, Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn declared the new Nismo headquarters open and explained how it would play an even more prominent role for the company’s performance car and motorsport activities.

“Nismo will bring new excitement to the Nissan portfolio with a broader range of affordable and innovative performance models for more markets and more people,” said Mr. Ghosn. “Whether it’s a small car or a sports car, if it’s wearing the Nismo badge it offers something special – quality, functionality, and efficiency, with Nismo’s distinctive styling, sporty handling and dynamic performance capabilities.”

The first new Nissan road car to get the Nismo treatment, the Juke Nismo, is already on sale in Europe and Japan and launches in the U.S. in the second quarter of this year.

A new version of the 370Z Nismo for European markets is the next Nismo road car, which made its world debut earlier this month.

Nissan is promising a rapid pace of introduction of even more models, at least one model every year during the Nissan Power88 period, encompassing the breadth of the Nissan road car range. This will include the flagship of Nissan’s performance and technology, the GT-R.

“It would be unthinkable for us to develop a range of Nismo road cars without including the GT-R,” said Mr. Ghosn. “The standard road car is a global supercar and the GT-R’s performance on track reflects the passion and talents of the Nismo team. The GT-R Nismo will be special and I can’t wait to drive it.”

We are hoping that we will soon be seeing some of these models in our local market, rather soon than later.

Datsun Brand to Return to South Africa

Datsun Brand to Return to South Africa

Nissan South Africa has announced that the Datsun Brand will be re-introduced to the South African market by as early as 2014. The first model to be introduced will be a new passenger vehicle that will be launched by the end of 2014.

The re-introduction of the Datsun brand globally forms part of Nissan Power 88 mid-term plan to achieve 8% of the global market share and 8% operating profit by fiscal year 2016. The official public announcement was made last year April by Carlos Ghosn (check out our previous story)

The main focus for the sale of the new passenger car from Datsun will be on emerging markets, namely India, Indonesia, South Africa and Russia. Nissan South African must have done some work in motivating for the re-introduction of Datsun in South Africa, as South Africa did not feature as a possible market in last year’s press release from Nissan Global.

The Datsun brand was phased out in 1981 when it was integrated with Nissan branding as the company expanded globally. Datsun is to be re-established with a strong independent brand identity, alongside the Nissan and Infiniti brands.

“Datsun enjoyed a proud heritage in the country after the Bluebird made its debut at the Pretoria Show in 1958, the 120Y and SSS models were household names, before going on to become the number one brand between 1976 and 1978,” said Mike Whitfield, managing Director of Nissan South Arica.

While NSA currently plans to initiate Datsun brand sales with one passenger vehicle model, it is anticipated that a broader range of Datsun vehicles will be available in the future.

The Nissan 370Z Nismo

The Nissan 370Z Nismo

The Nissan 370Z Nismo was officially unveiled for the European market yesterday, signalling the entry of the second member of Europe’s new Nissan Nismo range.

The Nissan 370Z was unveiled ahead of its public debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March this year.

Featuring dramatic styling with red Nismo design signatures it also packs increased power and improved aerodynamics. Available only as a coupe with a six-speed manual gearbox, the 370Z Nismo features extensive engineering and styling enhancements.

A version of the 370Z Nismo is already on sale in North America and Japan, but for Europe a unique specification has been developed to suit both road conditions and the tastes of European driving enthusiasts. Any chance we could see the Nissan Nismo range introduced in South Africa? We hope so.

The front end features a more aggressive design improving airflow under the car, leading to improved stability at higher speeds and through corners. This additional downforce is complemented by an extensively re-engineered suspension and chassis set-up, enhancing stability and handling on both road and track.

Other design enhancements include the distinctive Nismo red pinstripe lines visible at both the front and the rear and on the door mirrors. Unique dark grey Nismo superlight 19-inch forged alloy wheels with sports-derived red brake calipers and wider high performance tyres are also fitted. At the rear a smart new spoiler adds the finishing visual touch while also improving aerodynamic performance.

Inside, the steering wheel is finished in alcantara and leather with a red race-inspired ‘top dead centre’ marker, as seen on the Juke Nismo. The sports seats are fully electric with special Nismo badging and red stitching for a premium and sporty detail. The finishing touch is a numbered Nismo plate adding exclusivity to each 370Z Nismo.

The Z’s 3.7-litre V6 engine in the 370Z Nismo delivers 253kW, up from 241kW in the standard car, while torque increases from 363Nm to 371Nm. The result is improved responsiveness across the low and mid rev range, and a claimed 0 to 100km/h time of only 5.2 seconds.

Enhancing braking feel is also a crucial part of the Z’s development, so Nismo engineers have adopted high rigidity brake hoses and high performance brake fluid from the R35 GT-R. An exclusive Nismo dual exhaust system also enhances and amplifies the thrilling sound of the Z’s 3.7-litre V6 engine.

Nissan Resonance Crossover Concept

Nissan Resonance Crossover Concept

Nissan unveiled the hybrid-electric Nissan Resonance Crossover concept at this year’s North American International Auto Show (NAIAS), signalling the future direction of Nissan crossovers with smart edgy design. The design cues of the Nissan Resonance crossover concept should hopefully feed into the brands current SUV models, namely the Murano, Qashqai, and Juke.

Based on the number of crossovers exhibited at this year’s NAIAS, automotive manufacturers would have us believe that crossovers key to their model line-ups and as such key growth areas in terms of expanding their market share.

According to said Francois Bancon, Nissan Motor Co. division general manager, Product Strategy and Planning, “When the designers were first working on the Nissan Resonance, they were inspired by scientific advancements in technology and material innovations. They also were inspired by the aspirations of those people who embrace innovation. It was about serving those people a concept vehicle that is forward-looking and fuses style with an athletic ride.”

The front exterior design shows the V-motion, which starts from the front grille, moves through the bonnet and resonates with boomerang shaped headlights. The roof’s unique “floating” design is created through the use of thin, steeply raked A-pillars, a large full-length glass panel and flowing D-pillar designs.

The interior is referenced as mimicking a futuristic VIP lounge, with its lights, buttery leather and premium-stitched seats all of which exude a feel of genuine sophistication.

Thoughtfully considered details, including sequential welcome lighting, add warmth and drama upon entering the vehicle. The dramatic interior illumination highlights the natural wood pattern in the modern cabin.

An advanced instrument panel floats on a generous console, creating a forum where the driver can access all infotainment and communication features.

The Nissan Resonance Concept hybrid-electric powertrain offers an environmentally friendly powertrain options for customers who do not necessarily want to compromise on driving pleasure. The all-wheel drive Resonance includes Nissan’s proprietary “one-motor, two-clutch” system that combines a smaller displacement internal combustion petrol engine with an electric motor/lithium-ion battery and advanced management system.  Resonance also features Nissan’s next-generation Xtronic CVT® (Continuously Variable Transmission).

These changes came to effect as a result of additional information gained from this years participation in the Nürburgring 24-Hour race.

The improved engine response of the Nissan GT-R is achieved by the use og higher-output injectors, modification of the turbocharger bypass valve, and modifications to the oil pan.

Improvements to the ride and handling have been achieved by lowering the centre of gravity (CoG) by making changes to the shock absorbers and front stabiliser, the installation of cam on the front suspension to improve camber accuracy and maintainability of the alignment settings.

The torque carrying capacity of the driveshafts to the hub bearings has been increased to improve reliability in high-stress situations, such as track driving.

Three interior packages will be available for the 2013 Nissan GT-R; the Pure Edition, the Black Edition and the Premium Edition.

More Nissan Juke’s Heading to SA

More Nissan Juke’s Heading to SA

The demand for the Nissan Juke has far outstripped supply since it was launched almost over a year ago. Owing to this Nissan South Africa has managed to secure extra stock for the local market to improve Juke’s availability and boost local sales.

According to Nissan SA “The innovative and unconventional Juke – which has created its own genre in the market – has proven to be an instant success the world over, including in South Africa.”

Nancy Reddy, Product Manager for Juke at Nissan SA, stated: “We have seen phenomenal local popularity for Juke since launching last year and have unfortunately not been able to match demand with supply. We are now happy to announce the increase in availability and look forward to more Juke models on South African roads, especially the normally-aspirated models which suffered the largest shortfall in previous months.”

With increased supply for the last quarter of 2012 and into 2013, Nissan SA expects Juke sales to increase significantly.
