The New Ford Focus ST vs The VW Golf VI GTI, Which Is Better?[Video]

The New Ford Focus ST vs The VW Golf VI GTI, Which Is Better?[Video]

In this video Ken Block and Vaughn Gittin Jr. put the New Ford Focus ST against the GOlf VI GTi. The video may be a bit biased considering that Ford asked both drivers to pit the two vehicles against each other, and perhaps even more so since both drivers professionally race Ford vehicles.

However the video makes for great entertainment. We think the Ford and VW fans will be at each others throats really soon, especially since the Ford Focus ST has now been launched locally.

Ford Focus ST Sound Symposer [Video]

Ford Focus ST Sound Symposer [Video]

In order to enhance your aural driving pleasure the Ford Focus ST comes equipped with a “Sound Symposer” built into it that direct the right engine sounds to the Focus ST Cabin.

A large part of this also has to do with the fact that the Ford Focus ST now uses a 4 cylinder turbocarged engine as opposed to the 5 cylinder turbocharged engine that is used on the outgoing model.

The video below makes out a comparison between the mundane and sometimes rather annoying  daily noises we hear as we going about our business as opposed to the enchanting engine sound that emanates from the Focus ST engine.

Ford Focus ST Launched In South Africa

Ford Focus ST Launched In South Africa

The Ford Focus ST was launched locally, last week Tuesday, to a select number of journalists at the Aldo Scribante Race Track in Port Elizabeth. Since our last article on the Ford Focus ST in July we have been anticipating the local launch. The Ford Focus ST will go on sale this coming November and will be available in two trim options ST1 and ST3.

The Ford Focus ST comes equipped with a 184kW 2.0L turbocharged EcoBoost engine, which accelerates the new Ford Focus ST from 0-100 km/h in 6.5 seconds and has a top speed of 248 km/h. All of this is achieved while maintaining a claimed fuel consumption of 7.2 l/100 km and CO2 emissions of 169 g/km; a 20 percent improvement over the previous Focus ST.

The 2.0L turbocharged EcoBoost engine is mated to a six-speed manual transmission.

As mentioned earlier the Ford Focus ST will be available in two trim packages, ST1 and ST3.

The ST1 trim package offers keyless start, a deflation detection system, cruise control and power 1-shot up/down driver front and rear windows to name just a few features.

The high-spec, ST3 model adds auto folding mirrors, keyless entry, Dual Electronic Automatic Temperature Control (DEATC), rain sensitive wipers and Bi-Xenon HID headlamps including LED daytime running lights, auto-dimming rear view mirror and automatic wipers, and Leather Recaro seats with 8-way adjustability and pull-out cushion, plus the newly developed and eye catching Recaro rear bench.

The Ford SYNC system, which is also available on Focus Trend and Sport derivatives, will be available on the Ford Focus ST. The Ford SYNC system is an advanced software platform that provides hands-free, voice-activated in-car connectivity. The SYNC system allows customers to connect a compatible mobile phone or digital media player to their Focus ST via Bluetooth®1 or USB.

The pricing for the Ford Focus ST models is as indicated below inclusive of Vat and CO2 tax.

New Ford Focus ST Heading To South Africa

New Ford Focus ST Heading To South Africa

The New Ford Focus ST is set to arrive in South Africa in the fourth quarter of this year, most likely November.

From an exterior point of view the main focus areas have to be the prominent one-piece trapezoidal grille with hexagonal mesh and the bold red ST badge, LED running day time lights, integrated rear roof spoiler and the centrally mounted dual pipe exhaust system eminating from the redesigned rear bumperat the rear. Well, the new Tangerine Scream signature colour which is said to match the Focus ST’s exciting and energetic character could possibly be added to this list as well, if it’s to your taste.

The new Ford Focus ST will make use of a 2.0 L four cylinder turbocharged EcoBoost engine which just so happens to be one cylinder less compared to the previous model Ford Focus ST which came equipped with a five cylinder turbo engine. However all is not at a loss as the new engine produces 12kW more compared the previous generation engine. The new Focus ST produces 184kW of power and 360 Nm of torque.

It achieves this through a combination of high pressure direct injection, low-inertia turbocharging, and Twin-independent Variable Cam Timing (Ti-VCT), as well as redesigned intake and exhaust systems, and unique calibration.

The introduction of a sound imposer in the intake helps to add character to the sound of the 2.0 L turbocharged engine which would otherwise have been muted. The sound imposer works by enriching the natural sounds of the vehicle by capturing internal engine oscillations and piping them through the interior. Although not necessarily on par with the sound of the previous generation Focus ST the Car Magazine crew claims it is still much better compared to a number of other four cylinder turbocharged engines currently on the market.

The Focust ST comes fitted with a six-speed manual transmission and uses the electric power steering in conjunction with the ESP system to cut any torque steer before it even reaches the driver. This basically eliminates the need for a mechanical diff which in previous Ford Focus St models would have necessitated the use of a limited slip diff (LSD) or the RevoKnuckle Technology.

Pricing for the New Ford Focus ST for the South African market has not yet been released.

Have a look at the two videos below for a taste of what’s to come.
