Travel Safe This Easter Weekend

Travel Safe This Easter Weekend

Odds are that a large number of South African motorists will be on the road this coming Easter weekend. I have to admit that as part of these holidays some remote part of my brain always waits to hear about road incidences and fatalities which is actually quite sad. I believe we can all do our part by ensuring our vehicles are well maintained and safe before setting out on these journeys, every small bit counts.

The Retail Motor Industry (RMI) National Vehicle Testing Association (NVTA), with the help of participating vehicle testing stations, both municipal and private, created a free national safety check campaign that began from the 28 March 2012 and runs until the 5 April 2012.

Research conducted by the RMI indicates that the causes of major fatal accidents can frequently be attributed directly to safety critical component failure. Alarmingly, in the previous free safety check campaign performed by NVTA, an 82 per cent failure rate for inspected vehicles was documented.

This year’s national campaign is a safety-critical check and not a roadworthy evaluation, and concerns the inspection of the following important components of motor vehicles:

  • All lights (including indicators)
  • Wheel alignment
  • Exhaust
  • Front and rear suspension
  • Steering mechanism (steering control arm, steering box and tie rod ends) Hand-brake
  • Foot-brake rear
  • Foot-brake front
  • Rear tyres
  • Front tyres
  • Wipers and
  • Seatbelts

To locate your nearest participating vehicle testing station (countrywide) simply call the RMI’s Regional Offices on the numbers set out below.
