Supercharged Toyota 86 by RGMotorsport

Supercharged Toyota 86 by RGMotorsport

Ever since the introduction of the Toyota 86 a  number of tuning companies have been doing their best to get the most out of the 86. Rumours of a turbocharged or supercharged version of the Toyota 86 from Toyota or Toyota TRD have been going around for some time but no timing has been confirmed as of yet.

Well a local company RGMotorsport took on the challenge and bolted a Vortech supercharger to the Toyota 86 equipped with the automatic transmission. The outcome; a top speed of 258.8 km/h compared to the stock 205.7km/h, and a 0 – 100km/h time of 6.83 seconds as opposed to the stock 10.24 seconds.

The addition of the Vortech bolt-on supercharger allows the power of the naturally aspirated Toyota 86 147kW engine to be increased to 220kW, that’s a 50% increase in grunt.

The Vortech bolt-on supercharger was imported from the USA in kit form, according to RGM the installation of this kit is really simple according to their standards.

Forcing the air into the intercooler is a V-3 H67BC centrifugal supercharger and this particular unit is designed specifically for the horizontally-opposed FA20 Boxer engine. The package incorporates a generously-sized airbox and an optimised filter housing which allows for additional flow while retaining the factory cold air ram intake.

Other than the installation of the Vortech kit bolt-on kit to the Toyota 86, a unichip auxiliary engine management unit was installed to remap the ignition, air and fuel requirements in order to ensure consistent power and reliability when running on standard 95 octane pump fuel.

According to Rob Green, managing member RG Motorsport, “I believe we really hit the sweet spot with this conversion and it works exceptionally well. There are no sacrifices when it comes to smoothness and drivability and the power delivery is fierce without being scary. Drive it normally and you wouldn’t actually know it is Supercharged, but when you put your foot down and flip the paddles down a ratio or two it really goes.”

The Toyota 86 RGM Supercharged costs R85 000 including a Techniflow exhaust system, and comes with a six month or 20 000 km warranty on all components used in the conversion.

Toyota Bids Farewell to Founding Member

Toyota Bids Farewell to Founding Member

Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) mourns the passing of one of its founding fathers. Jan de Necker passed away last week in Paarl, Western Cape at the ripe old age of 93.

Mr De Necker was a well-known and much loved member of Toyota. As a good friend and business associate of founder Dr Albert Wessels, Mr De Necker was instrumental in bringing Toyota to South Africa. This is evident in the way in which he assisted in brokering a meeting between Dr Wessels and Toyota in Japan and how he laid the foundations for an import permit from the then South African government.

As business partners Mr De Necker and Dr Wessels co-founded the SA Finansieringskorporasie (Sasficor) along with Sasbank, Bonuskor and of course Toyota South Africa.

“Only recently Mr De Necker celebrated our fiftieth anniversary in South Africa with us and I am sure he shared our happiness when we notched up 33 years of market leadership earlier this year. Much of this success is thanks to the foundations laid by him and Dr Wessels, not only in the company and its management structure, but also its customer first philosophy and culture of innovation and hard work,” says Dr Van Zyl, President and CEO of Toyota South Africa Motors.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the De Necker family and his wife Dalenè, son Pieter, daughter Sunè and three great – and five grandchildren. Mr De Necker served on the Toyota board into his seventies and his insight, wisdom and business skills will be sorely missed.”

A special memorial service was held for Mr De Necker at the Strooidak Church in Paarl on 27 January 2013.

Welcome to the all new 2013 Toyota Auris

Welcome to the all new 2013 Toyota Auris

Welcome the new C-segment 2013 Toyota Auris, a bewitching car according to Toyota.

According to Glenn Crompton, Vice President of Marketing, the changes to the all-new Auris are dramatic: “It now looks a lot sharper and more distinctive. It’s lower and visually has a more dynamic stance but the revisions are much more than just skin deep. The whole package is lighter, the handling and steering are sweeter thanks to tweaks to the suspension and electric power steering and the car generally feels more nimble and responsive, but I’m happy to say it still rides exceptionally well – if anything it’s even more compliant.”

The new 2013 Toyota Auris has an overall length of 4275mm (an increase of 30mm) and its wheelbase remains the same at 2600mm. The overall height of the Auris has also been reduced by 55mm making it one of the lowest vehicles in the segment, all without compromising on passenger accommodation.

The look up front takes on the new Toyota family “face,” the most noteworthy elements being the grille design and the eyebrow shaped headlamps.

The side profile is stronger than the outgoing Auris and features a steeply-raked windscreen, a pronounced rising belt line and a sharper angle to the rear pillar. What also helps with the sleeker and streamlined look of the Auris is the lowered ride height (10mm lower) which narrows the gap between the wheel arches and tyres, and aligning the wheels more closely with the bodywork.

A wide opening tailgate at the rear (increased by 20mm) should help with hauling things in and out of the Toyota Auris. The rear tailgate features concave and convex surfacing which add and amusing element to the rear and this is topped off with an integral roof spoiler.

Another notable feature at the rear is the wraparound rear combination lamp design which reinforces the shape of both the rear wing and rear screen, as well as the added strength of the shoulder over the rear wheel arch.

The interior as mentioned earlier is said to offer more space and greater comfort for occupants. Overall the interior looks like it offers a premium feel with silver paint finish on dash items, same font on the switch gear, instrument cluster and center console.

Overall occupant space has been optimised by a new front seat design which increases rear leg room by 20mm. Ingress and egress from the rear passenger has also been optimised by increasing the opening width.

Load space on the Toyota Auris has been increased from 283 litres to 360 litres with the added flexibility of using the 60:40 split-folding rear seats.

The Toyota Auris will be powered by two petrol variants and a hybrid engine which will become available in the form of the Toyota HSD from February 2013 onwards.

The two petrol variants will consist of the 1.33 litre dual VVT-I petrol engine (73kW and 128NM) and the 1.6 litre Valvematic petrol engine (97kW and 160Nm).

Available on the 1.6 Valematic petrol versions of the Auris will be the Multidrive S continuously variable transmission (CVT) which first appeared on the Toyota Verso.

The recommended retail price including VAT for the Toyota Verso in South Africa will be as listed below.

Toyota Auris 1.3 X -                 R195 000

Toyota Auris 1.6 Xi –               R217 500

Toyota Auris 1.6 XS -              R228 600

Toyota Auris 1.6 XR –             R253 200

Toyota Auris 1.6 XR CVT -    R265 600

The Toyota Corolla Furia Concept Hints At Forthcoming New Model [With Video]

The Toyota Corolla Furia Concept Hints At Forthcoming New Model [With Video]

Toyota revealed the Corolla Furia Concept at the 2013 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. This exciting compact sedan concept hints at the styling cues consumers can expect to see on the next-generation Corolla. The concept represents an exterior styling study by Toyota designers, and it builds on the brand’s product development priority to develop more dramatic, expressively designed vehicles.

While very definitely just a concept, the Corolla Furia Concept is an early indicator of where compact car design will lead Toyota in the future. According to Bill Fay, Group Vice President and General Manager of the Toyota Division, Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A, “it blends a heightened emphasis on dramatic design and modern elements of high technology to generate curb appeal that will surprise a lot of people.”

The Furia is designed around a theme of “Iconic Dynamism,” which uses pure and simple surface elements to create a confident, decisive and recognisable appearance appealing to more youthful consumers. It features a more provocative, dynamic interpretation of a compact sedan that displays a more stable, athletic stance with 19-inch allow wheels pushed to the vehicle’s corners with short overhangs to help emphasize its long wheelbase.

The Corolla Furia design includes a swept windshield, with a sloped roofline and pronounced fender flares, to help communicate a sense of motion even when the car is stationary. The aggressively styled front fascia, with a blacked-out grille treatment, helps highlight a pair of sculpted front LED headlamps that combine with the rear composite LED tail light assemblies to add a sense of advanced technology to the Furia’s impactful exterior. Carbon fibre accents adorn the Corolla Furia Concept’s wheel wells, rocker panels, and rear valance, which includes ornate metal exhaust outlet surrounds to add a sense of modern athleticism.

According to Calvyn Hamman, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Toyota SA Motors, “the Furia Concept offers the world a sneak preview of what people can expect from our next best-selling sedan, you could call it a high-tech take on classic Corolla values. As one of South Africa’s all-time favourite vehicles it has achieved iconic status and there is still something reassuringly Corolla in this concept.”

New Fourth Generation Toyota RAV4 Debuts at LA Auto Show

New Fourth Generation Toyota RAV4 Debuts at LA Auto Show

The all new fourth generation Toyota RAV4 debuted at the Los Angeles Auto Show earlier this week. The new Toyota RAV4 features some rather significant changes on the exterior and interior. Like most new models entering the market the engine line-up has also received some attention, the result of which is improvement in performance, reduction in fuel consumptions, and lower emissions.

The new RAV4 is longer and wider than the outgoing model (205mm longer and 30mm wider), these increased dimensions have allowed the designers to increase the cabin space as well as load capacity of the RAV4. However it’s important to point out that the ride height has suffered a tad bit, as the new Toyota RAV4 sits 25mm lower in comparison to the outgoing model.

One of the exterior highlights on the Toyota RAV4 include the signature Toyota “face” which includes a stronger treatment of the lower grille and a smaller upper grille extending the full width between the headlamp units. The lower grille forms a trapezoidal opening in the front bumper.

From the side, the new RAV4 inherits the rising belt line and distinct silhouette that have characterised successive generations of the model.

At the back the, the tailgate is now top-hinged and features an integrated spoiler (On some models the tailgate will be power operated).

The interior has also received some well deserved attention. The new Toyota RAV4 interior seems to extend the practicality of its predecessor by offering more room, higher quality finishes and a more focused and engaging driving experience.

The clean and sophisticated design introduces high quality materials, including soft padding on many of the touch-points for driver and passengers, crisp trim finishes, new colours and more leather around the instrument panel.

As a testament to the practicality of the Toyota RAV4, the rear seats can be quickly and easily folded flat. The seat divides 60:40 and each section can be reclined independently.

The load space is longer, increasing capacity to 547 litres, and an extra 49 litres of storage have been added to the undertray, taking it to 100 litres.

The engine line-up at least in Europe will consist of a 2.0 litre 91kW petrol engine, a 2.0 litre 111kW diesel engine, and a 2.2 litre 110kW diesel engine.

Toyota’s Stop & Start technology will also feature on some of the models such as the 2.0 litre diesel front wheel-drive RAV4.

From a riding and handling perspective the new Toyota RAV4 builds on its SUV attributes with retuned suspension, revised electric power steering and an integrated Dynamic Drive System that comes with Sport mode. Down-hill assist and Hill-Start Assist are also available.

Another feature present on the RAV4 is the Integrated Dynamic Drive System which coordinates control of the new dynamic Torque Control AWD system, Vehicle Stability Control and Electric power steering to improve performance handling and safety. The system also feature a 4WD lock button for off-road driving, allowing the driver to lock torque distribution in a 50:50 ratio at speeds up to 40km/h.

The changes to the new Toyota RAV4 are definitely welcome to us however we feel that this market has become fiercely competitive since the Toyota RAV was initially launched in 1994. Considering the number of SUVs which are available at the moment, the new Toyota RAV4 will have to be well priced locally in order to fend off the competition.

Test Programme for Dakar Rally Toyota Hilux Progressing Well

Test Programme for Dakar Rally Toyota Hilux Progressing Well

With four weeks left before the two Toyota Hilux Dakar Rally challengers got loaded for delivery in South America, the vehicles are still undergoing intensive testing. The testing programme will also see the two vehicles participating in the final round of the domestic off road championship, the Gold 400 in Gauteng on Friday and Saturday.

This past week the evolution version of the Dakar Toyota Hilux has been put through its paces at the hands of both Giniel de Villiers and Duncan De Vos. All this testing has been performed in sand dunes and dirt tracks on the outskirts of Johannesburg.

De Villiers and Dirk von Zitzewitz, the 2009 Dakar Rally winners and third this year in an Imperial Toyota Hilux, will crew the 2013 evo Hilux.  Vos and Rob Howie will compete in the 2012 version in which they finished 10th in this year’s Dakar Rally. The Toyota Hilux has undergone continuous development during the domestic off-road championship season and has acquired a lot of the new specification of the evolution vehicle.  Both are now powered by a 5-litre version of Toyota’s production all-aluminium V8 engine fitted with a 36 mm air restrictor to meet Dakar regulations.

“It’s been a really big week for us,” said Toyota Motorsport director and team principal Glyn Hall.  “After a massive achievement by the team in the workshop to get the new racing Hilux built and ready for testing in a very short space of time, we have successfully run it virtually from dawn to dusk every day this past week, in both sandy and rough conditions.

“So far we’ve had zero faults and that’s meant we’ve been able to concentrate on the vehicle’s performance, which we’ve improved considerably.  This has been great news for the team and has boosted our confidence for the great challenges ahead.  The designers, fabricators and assemblers have done a brilliant job under the most trying of circumstances.  Little sleep, lots of dedication and massive self-belief.  I’m very proud of them all.”

We wish the guys all the best in their preparations. It would be great to see a South African Team win the Dakar Rally once again.

Does Your Wife Disapprove Of Your Toyota 86 Purchase?

Does Your Wife Disapprove Of Your Toyota 86 Purchase?

We have been trying to get hold of this Toyota 86 ad for the last few days and finally we managed to get it. The ad just speaks to those moments when all reason fails, and emotion takes over; those moments when as a man you tend to make decisions which may be deemed to be rather brash and rather childish in the eyes of your significant other.

In this case that decision refers to the purchase of the Toyota 86. A series of events could have led to the purchase of this rear wheel two door coupé  which has since it’s launch already led it to receive some form of cult like following, either badged as the Toyota 86 , Toyota GT 86, Scion FR-S, or Subaru BRZ.

We postulate that the purchase may have come from those random Saturday strolls into the dealership floor. Walking in to the dealership the victim may have caught the glimpse of a rather captivating coupé like silhouette on the dealer floor, the Toyota 86, a bit odd compared to the rest of the seemingly bland vehicles.

A wise Sales Rep spotting the opportunity for an emotional appeal to the victims senses, swiftly waltzed over and placed the vehicle keys in their palm and told them to take if for a spin and the rest is history.

A few days later having taken delivery of the Toyota 86, the ecstatic victim had still not conjured the courage to inform his significant other, and figured the best way to do it was just to show it to them, that simple.

Watch the video to see what happens, hopefully you enjoy it.

But watch out about 44 seconds into the video there is a peak at some dudes butt cheek, so be warned if you are watching the video at work.

Interesting Body Kit For Your Toyota 86 [Video]

Interesting Body Kit For Your Toyota 86 [Video]

GReddy recently built a mean looking widebody kit for the Toyota 86 (Scion FR-S) and aptly named it the GReddy RocketBunny Aerokit Widebody Ver.

GReddy is a sub-brand of the Japanese company, Trust Company Ltd, a major player in automotive performance products.

We came across this video while perusing that bottomless pit of information we call the world-wide web. The widebody kit seen in the video is roughly worth $3000 with the rear wing costing about $2900.

Enjoy.
