South African Automotive Week 2012 in Port Elizabeth

South African Automotive Week 2012 in Port Elizabeth

The third edition of the South African Automotive Week (SAAW) will be held in Port Elizabeth from October 10 to October 13, 2012.

SAAW 2012 will be held at the Moffet on Main Lifestyle Shopping Centre and will cover more than 10 000 square metres of floor space, according to event director Andrew Binning of organisers Inkanyezi Events.

Motor industry leaders and strategists from around the country will be joining global experts on the podium and in workshops to plot the way forward for the South African automotive industry.

“The South African motor industry has put its full support behind South African Automotive Week, and it will host several conferences, match-making appointments and the annual meeting of the National Association of Component and Allied Manufacturers(NAACAM),” Binning said at a briefing in Port Elizabeth following a meeting of the SAAW 2012 task team.

Speakers and participants include strategist Clem Sunter, marketing guru Jeremy Maggs and OEM leaders Dave Powels of VWSA and Dr Martin Zimmerman of Mercedes Benz South Africa.

Other industry specialists participating in the workshops will be Dr Raymond Patel of merSETA, National Association of Automobile and Allied Manufacturers (Naacam) Director Roger Pitot, and international automotive expert Arthur David of the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO).

Feedback and the level of interest shown to date point to SAAW 2012 being “twice as big and twice as influential as SAAW 2009”. The initiative is held every two years, but skipped a year due to the Soccer World Cup. Over 5 000 trade visitors and 20 000 consumers are expected to visit South African Automotive Week.

Agents have been appointed “on every continent” to promote SAAW to industry associations, component manufacturers and embassies and market the South African automotive industry.

SAAW 2009 was one of the first industry events in South Africa to introduce a formal match-making meeting programme. According to Andrew Binning, “We helped organise over 300 meetings, and over 11 per cent of exhibitors closed deals worth more than half a million rand each.”

Recognising the value of SAAW, the industry is putting its money into the event in the form of sponsorships of a number of activities and events for SAAW 2012, while the main event is supported by the Eastern Cape Province, MerSETA, Eastern Cape Development Corporation, the Coega Development Corporation, and the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality.

In parallel with the South African Automotive Week, the Petrol Head Paradise Moto Show will also run from the 10th of October and end on the 14th of October. Although the Automotive Week will remain primarily focused on business to business and the Petrol Head Paradise Moto Show will focus primarily on displays and public events. According to Andrew Binning “The opportunity created by co-hosting the events on a single exhibition floor is the enhanced value add for both exhibitors and visitors.”

Trade delegates may register to participate in any activity of The Week or simply register as a Trade Visitor to attend the Tradeshow by going online at www.saaw.co.za and following the Register tab.
