Google Gets First Self-Driven Vehicle License

Google Gets First Self-Driven Vehicle License

The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) in the State of Nevada in the United States gave the first self driven vehicle license to Google.

The first car licensed is a Toyota Prius which was modified to include Google’s experimental technology.

Google’s self-driven cars rely on video cameras, radar sensors, lasers, and a database of information collected from manually driven cars to help navigate, according to the company. See the video below for an animation of how the system works.

Why would you want to autonomous or semi-autonomous vehicle? The main aim of such systems is to target distracted driving and prevent accidents. More especially when it comes to driving in stop-go traffic and boring stretches of highway. Other possible benefits of such systems include reduced congestion and fuel consumption.

However we feel there will still be some work from a legislative point of view and off course acceptance from the public on such systems.

A number of other manufacturers are also seeking to license their self driven cars in the state of Nevada, one of them being the Continental Automotive Group which has converted a Volkswagen Passat.

A number of other States are to follow suit including Google’s home State of California.

This is the future of the auto industry, and it is happening faster than most can realize.
