Mercedes Raises Concerns Over New Aircon Refrigerant

New findings by Mercedes raise concerns over the use of the new aircon refrigerant R-1234yf. The aircon refrigerant R-1234yf replaces the more common R-134a used on most vehicles. R-1234yf has been deemed mandatory for use on new motor vehicles since January2011 and will be required for all motor vehicles by 2017.

The switch from R-134a to R-1234yf is predominantly due to the lower carbon dioxide footprint of the new refrigerant.

However recent findings from Mercedes show that the new R-1234yf refrigerant is flammable under certain real-life conditions. The climate-friendly R-1234yf refrigerant was previously perceived to be safe due to the numerous laboratory and crash tests carried out by a number of international vehicle manufacturers and independent institutions.

The tests performed by Mercedes went above and beyond the legally prescribed tests, and required the R-1234yf refrigerant to be dynamically dispersed at high pressure near to hot components of the test vehicle’s exhaust system. Similar tests conducted on the older refrigerant did not result in ignition.

Based on the findings Mercedes will continue to use the proven and safe R-134a refrigerant on its vehicles. Daimler has already informed the relevant authorities of these facts and will also make the results of this investigation available to all relevant associations as well as to other vehicle manufacturers.

Let’s hope a solution to the problem can be identified swiftly.
