Jay Leno Visits Nissan Heritage Garage – Test Drives Nissan 240Z

Jay Leno Visits Nissan Heritage Garage – Test Drives Nissan 240Z

Jay Leno, the American comedian and car collector visited the Nissan Heritage Garage, located in Zama, Japan, over the summer holidays. During this visit he was able to test drive the Nissan 240Z (Fairlady Z).

Jay Leno was invited to the Nissan Heritage Garage by Chief Creative Officer Shiro Nakamura, who had visited Leno’s Classic Car Garage in California and was returning the favor in Japan.

The Nissan design chief showed Jay Leno some of the approximately 400 cars in the garage that mark the company’s near 80-year history.

“It’s very nice to have him here, because I have been to his garage a couple of years ago,” Nakamura said. “It was a good occasion to show him the heritage of Nissan.”

The huge facility is home to many signature models, and after walking through parked vehicles, the stand-up star – a very-serious car aficionado – on his first visit to Japan said the Zama trip helped to put in perspective Japanese car design over the decades.

“It was fun to see the stuff from the ’50s and ’60s. To me the most interesting part is from a design point-of-view, to see how the Japanese start with an existing  design – ‘Oh, that kind of looks like an early Ford, that kind of looks like an early Aston or any of those other cars that might have been here,’” Jay Leno said.

“Then, gradually they added their own touches. To me, the most fun cars are the ones from the ’60s, where there’s a lot of chrome and there sort of emulating the American style, which I take as a compliment, and then eventually you find your own style.”

“If you’re a comedian you model yourself on George Carlin or whomever, but as you grow you develop your own style.  Within the last 30 years, to see the Japanese come into their own with really unique designs that don’t look like anything else… To me that’s what makes it – when you put your own identity on an automobile. That’s what makes it very personal.”

Next generation Nissan GT-R Confirmed for 2018

The next generation Nissan GT-R is still on track for production in 2018, according to Edmunds who recently visited Nissan’s R&D center in Atsugi, Japan.

Kazutoshi Mizuno the Chief Engineer and product specialist of the current Nissan GT-R will also be leading the development of the next generation Nissan GT-R.

According to Edmunds “the GT-R team is watching the development of the soon-to-be-introduced Acura NSX closely, especially after Honda insiders revealed that their hybrid-powered sports car will lap the Nürburgring faster than the GT-R. Nissan’s keen interest in the Acura NSX also indicates that a hybrid version of the GT-R is a distinct possibility.”

What a long wait for the next generation Nissan GT-R, however enthusiasts will be glad to know that a few upgrades are expected for the current Nissan GT-R towards the end of 2013.

Nissan Juke Nismo Revealed at Le Mans

Nissan Juke Nismo Revealed at Le Mans

The production version of the Nissan Juke Nismo made its debut at the Le Mans this past weekend, alongside the Nissan Juke R and the Nissan DeltaWing. The Nissan Juke Nismo concept was unveiled at the Tokyo and Geneva Motor Show in 2011.

The choice for launching the Nissan Juke Nismo performance crossover was most likely helped by the good reception of the Nissan Juke-R which has been put into production due to demand although originally envisioned as a once-off concept.

The Juke Nismo is powered by a tuned-up version of its 1.6-litre direct injection turbocharged petrol engine, inspired by the engine fitted on the Nissan DeltaWing.

Costmetic changes include a new aerodynamics kit, which features lower front and rear bumpers, wider wings and sill side skirts, and a modified grille and tailgate spoiler which control airflow. Stylish new 18-inch alloy wheels with wider tyres offer improved grip, and further boost the Juke’s on-road presence.

The Nismo treatment continues inside the cabin, where the steering wheel, pedals, gauges, gear knob and door trims have been redesigned to boost the sporty feeling when driving. To enhance the performance personality of the car, special suede-trimmed Nismo sports seats with red stitching have been added for increased holding while cornering.

From a ride and handling perspective the Nissan Juke Nismo features stiffened suspension settings and new steering modifications for sportier direct handling and improved traction control, the new model will also be available with torque vectoring, a technology offering better grip and cornering capacity.

Andy Palmer, Executive Vice President Global Product Planning, says “The introduction of Juke Nismo further cements our dedication to provide innovation and excitement for everyone. The Juke, with its radical design and pioneering attitude, is the natural choice to be one of the first Nissan models to receive the mythical performance and distinctive design treatment from our Nismo specialists.”

If you have some time to spare watch the video below where Jerry Hardcastle, Global Chief Marketability Engineer, explains the techs and specs of some of the cars Nissan show cased at the Le Mans , from the Juke Nismo to the Nissan DeltaWing.
