A select number of South African journalists, from the financial sector, who attended the company’s Annual Business Results conference, were privy to a ‘sneak preview’ of the much anticipated all-new Mercedes-Benz A-Class, at the company’s East London plant.

An enthusiastic Dr Zimmermann said:  “The A-Class falls in a very competitive segment, however, Mercedes-Benz is no stranger to this segment as we invented it over 15 years ago with the first A-Class.  To date we’ve sold more than 2.1 million A-Classes. Sales of the new A-Class commenced in Europe in September 2012 – just five months ago – a total of 90 000 orders have already been received – this is what I call a great start!”

Mercedes-Benz CLA - In a League of Its Own

Mercedes-Benz CLA – In a League of Its Own

Official word on the Mercedes-Benz CLA four-door coupe is now out. After months of viewing camouflaged pictures of the CLA, Mercedes finally decided to alleviate us of our pain and show us the final product and just in time for the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) too.

The Mercedes-Benz CLA build on or rather follows on the success of the CLS and with it’s frameless doors astonishingly closely resembles the design of the Concept Style Coupe.

We already like the styling of the new A-Class which was a welcome departure from the previous generation A-Class, and we feel that Mercedes will definitely attract a new type of buyer with the CLA. This is well alluded to by Dr Joachim Schmidt, Executive Vice President Mercedes-Benz Cars,  Sales and Marketing, who stated that “We aim to reach new target groups with the CLA – including those who never intended driving a Mercedes.”

In keeping with its sporty positioning, the CLA is available with high-torque turbo engines ranging from 90kW up to 155 kW, sports suspension and 4MATIC all-wheel drive.

The technical highlights of this new design icon include a new world record in aerodynamics for series production automobiles (Cd value: 0.22) and numerous driving assistance systems, including advanced COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST (a radar-based braking system).

Five lines and packages which vary greatly in character are available to individualise the striking compact mid-range coupé. We’ll let the pictures do the talking here.

The exterior’s progressive, sporty appearance is continued inside the vehicle where a careful pairing and selection of high quality materials leads a well-executed interior.

You know what; we’ll let the pictures do the talking here. The car just looks striking. We hope the drive is as good as the car looks. But from what we can see from the engine specs we don’t think it will be a disappointment (we hope).

The petrol engines with a displacement of 1.6 and 2.0 litres cover an output spectrum ranging from 90 kW in the CLA 180 through 115 kW in the CLA 200 to 155 kW in the CLA 250. The two diesel engines combine dynamic low-end torque with the utmost efficiency: the  CLA 200 CDI generates 100 kW, with maximum torque of 300 Nm. With a cubic capacity of 2.2 litres, the CLA 220 CDI will offer an output of 125 kW and 350 Nm of torque, emitting only 109 g CO2 per kilometre.

All the engines feature the ECO start/stop function as standard. The engines are combined with a six-speed manual transmission or with the 7G-DCT dual clutch automatic transmission, which reconciles comfort and sportiness in inimitable fashion.

In keeping with the digital lifestyle of the CLA’s social media-savvy target group, smartphones can additionally be fully integrated into the vehicle’s display and operating system.

Daimler’s Digital Drive Style app concept, which together with the Drive Kit Plus for the iPhone® enables seamless integration of the iPhone® into the vehicle, has been extended. The highlights include Siri voice control and Glympse real-time location sharing. Glympse enables the user to share his or her current location with selected persons. Other functions are Facebook®, Twitter®, internet radio, AUPEO!™ Personal Radio and the advanced navigation solution from Garmin® with web-based real-time traffic information, online special destination search including Street View™ and 3D map display.

European orders begin with immediate effect with first deliveries scheduled for April 2013. We will keep our ears to the ground for the South African launch and let you know as soon as we find out.

The 2013 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG Sedan and Wagon [With Video]

The 2013 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG Sedan and Wagon [With Video]

The introduction of the E63 AMG Sedan and Wagon continues to herald Mercedes-Benz’s offensive attack on the premium high-performance passenger car sector, more especially when you consider the introduction of such models as the SL63 as well as the C63 AMG over the last couple of months. What’s even more exciting is that we can still look forward to the introduction of the A45 AMG as well as the CLA45 AMG.

The E63 looks impressive. I have to honestly say that I have never really been a big fan of the E-Class or the S-Class, or perhaps more the look than the actual technical wizardry that goes into the creation of these vehicles.

The European market launch of the new E 63 AMG with rear-wheel drive will begin in April 2013, with the all-wheel-drive E 63 AMG and the E 63 AMG S-Model following in June.

The new E63 AMG presents a more powerful character and a more dynamic appearance than all its predecessors: the new AMG design philosophy is immediately apparent at first glance, with the new “twin blade” radiator grille and the new “A-wing” in the AMG front apron defining the exclusive look.

The “A-Wing” also provides the back drp for three large cooling air intake opening.

On the side The striking air outlet openings at the sides, the black grille and the two sets of twin chrome tailpipes belonging to the AMG sports exhaust system provide an impression of width at the rear. The black diffusor insert with pronounced fins lends the E 63 AMG a powerful touch of race track atmosphere at the rear.

The interior is also as impressive as the interior with superior quality materials being used and perfected by excellent workmanship.

The 5.5 litre V8 that is housed underneath the bonnet of the E63 AMG S-model, introduced both in the form of the sedan and wagon, churns out an impressive 430kW of power and a 800Nm of torque and features the newly developed AMG 4-MATIC all-wheel-drive system. The more standard E63 AMG churns out an equally impressive 410kW and 720Nm of torque and will also be available with the 4-MATIC transmission as an option.

Acceleration to 100 km/h from a standing start in 3.6 seconds provides the E63 AMG S-Model with the top speed electronically limited to 250 km/h.

The 5.5 litre V8 powering the E63 AMG is mated to an AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission. The AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission has four modes “C” (Controlled Efficiency), “S” (Sport), “S+” (Sport plus) and “M” (Manual), giving the drive a number of options. In “C” mode, the ECO start/stop function is active and switches off the eight-cylinder engine when the vehicle is at a standstill. In addition, the transmission characteristics are tangibly soft, with smooth and early gear changes. Second gear is generally used as the starting gear in this mode.

The AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive distributes the engine torque at a ratio of 33 to 67 percent (front/rear axle). The rear-biased power distribution provides for the signature AMG high driving dynamics and superlative driving enjoyment according to Mercedes that is.

Pope Benedict XVI gets new Popemobile

Pope Benedict XVI gets new Popemobile

In continuation with its over 80 year tradition, Merceded-Benz yesterday delivered a new Popemobile to Pope Benedict XVI. The new popemobile was presented to Pope Benedict XVI by Dr Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars.

“It is an honour for Mercedes-Benz to be accompanying His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI on his future journeys with our new Popemobile”, said Zetsche at the handover of the new Popemobile in Rome. “As such, we are continuing our long-standing partnership with the Vatican. For more than 80 years now, Popes have been able to rely on the quality, safety and comfort of our Mercedes-Benz vehicles.”

The leader of the Catholic Church makes use of the Mercedes-Benz Popemobile at a number of public appearances both at home and abroad. It gives him the opportunity to get as close as possible to the public without having to forego the highest possible levels of safety and comfort.

Pope Benedict XVI will today make use of his new vehicle in Rome, where the Catholic Feast Day of the Immaculate Conception is traditionally celebrated at the Spanish Steps.

The Popemobile is fitted with the latest technological highlights from the current M-Class. In addition, the vehicle also features a new interior design.

Compared with the preceding model, the dome has been extended significantly, providing an improved amount of space and more convenient entry access. The view of the Pope has also been significantly enhanced thanks to considerably larger glass panels in the viewing area, together with large illuminated roof lining. The throne, the central design feature in the interior, bears the embroidered coat of arms of the Holy Father.

As with the preceding model, the body of the new Popemobile is painted in diamond white. And to facilitate frequent transport of the modified M-Class by air, Mercedes-Benz has reduced the overall height of the vehicle by a few centimetres, while at the same time improving the internal standing height.

Work on the new Popemobile began some nine months ago. The vehicle was designed and produced by Mercedes-Benz.

Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake: Model Range and Pricing

Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake: Model Range and Pricing

The new Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake wagon/estate with its unmistakable coupe proportions, has finally been launched in South Africa.

The CLS Shooting Brake’s proportions create a crouched posture: long bonnet, narrow window profile with frameless side windows, roof sloping dynamically towards the rear and continuing to the tail end of the vehicle. Only on closer look does it become clear that the Shooting Brake actually has five doors and offers more in terms of function.

One of the most talked about features of the CLS Shooting Brake, is the optional designo wood luggage compartment floor made from American cherry wood, which highlights the interior’s hand-crafted character.

The American cherry wood is a classic fine wood variety which contrasts effectively with the fumed oak inlaid work and the aluminium rails. This lends the luggage compartment the elegance of a yacht’s wooden deck combined with the fascination of high-tech and precision workmanship. The wood is characterised by its flexibility and elasticity, as well as its density and fine texture.

The CLS Shooting Brake offers five interior colours, five trim designs plus two different quality of leather to choose from. Customers have a choice of three exclusive wood types for the trim: high-gloss brown burr walnut, high-gloss black ash and silk matt poplar. Black piano lacquer trim is also optionally available.

Being a wagon, the CLS Shooting Brake offers a level of practicality. The CLS Shooting Brake has a load volume of between 590 and 1550 litres; this is despite the roof line, which one would think would inhibit load space. The CLS Shooting Brake also comes equipped standard with the EASY-PACK tailgate with electric opening and closing.

In conjunction with COMAND Online and reversing camera, a special camera resolution and an additional guide line are available to help the driver hook up a trailer without any assistance.

The CLS Shooting Brake is available with three engine variants – three petrol engines – CLS 350 BlueEFFICIENCY, CLS 500 BlueEFFICIENCY and the CLS 63 AMG.

The CLS 350 BlueEFFICICIENCY (225kW and 370NM) with the V6 naturally aspirated engine and the CLS 500 BlueEFFICIENCY (300kW and 600Nm) with the V8 bi-turbo engine both come with a 7-speed automatic transmission.

The CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake with an AMG 5.5 litre V8 bitrubo engine rated at 386kW which delivers 700Nm of torque comes with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission. With the “Edition 1″ variant, these performance values rise to 410 kW and 800 Nm.

Both the CLS 500 BlueEFFICIENCY and the CLS 63 AMG come with the ECO start/stop function as standard.

The CLS Shooting Brake  ride and handling consists a cobination of AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension with electronically controlled damping, electro-mechanical AMG speed-sensitive steering and the optional AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system is the epitome of superlative driving dynamics.

From a safety perspective , the CLS Shooting Brake comes with a plethora of both active and passive safety systems. More than ten driver assistance systems are able to help prevent traffic accidents and reduce the severity of an accident.

Standard safety features include BAS PLUS and the PRE-SAFE® Brake. Active Blind Spot Assist and Active Lane Keeping Assist are available as part of the Driving Assistance package Plus together with DISTRONIC PLUS.  Both assistance systems are not only able to detect an unintentional lane change or vehicles in the blind spot, but can also correct the direction of travel by gentle brake intervention if the driver ignores the visual or audible danger warnings.

The pricing for the Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake starts as follows:

CLS 350 BlueEFFICIENCY Shooting Brake – R835 000

CLS 500 BlueEFFICIENCY Shooting Brake – R1 044 000

CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake – R1 380 000

CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake “Edition 1” – R1 525 900

The new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Coupé Black Series [With Video]

The new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Coupé Black Series [With Video]

Mercedes-AMG last week Friday released information on the new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Coupé Black Series, inspired by the SLS AMG GT3 racing version.

“The new SLS AMG Coupé Black Series is a perfect study in the one hundred percent transfer of technology and engineering from motorsport to the road. We have drawn inspiration from the worldwide success of the SLS AMG GT3 customer sport racing car on both a conceptual and a technological level. Boasting numerous lightweight components and fascinating driving dynamics, our fifth Black Series model guarantees pure, unadulterated ‘Driving Performance’. The SLS AMG Coupé Black Series is the ultimate choice for fast laps and highly emotional driving experiences”, says Ola Källenius, Chairman of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

With a DIN kerb weight of 1550 kilograms (70kgs lighter than the SLS AMG), the SLS AMG Black Series achieves a power/weight ratio of 2.45 kg/hp. The uprated AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine generates a power output of 464 kW at 7400 rpm (additional 44 kW of power in comparison to the 420 kW offered by the SLS AMG) and accelerates the SLS AMG Coupé Black Series to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds.

The sound of the V8 engine is bolstered by a newly designed AMG sports exhaust system, made from titanium, features a distinctive centre and rear mufflers which provide for a more powerful and even more striking engine sound.

The power to weight ratio of 2.45kg/hp is the highest power to weight ratio of all AMG Black Series vehicles, and this is achieved by the systematic application of the “AMG Lightweight Performance” strategy. This sees the use of numerous weight saving elements such as the; bonnet, rear panel behind the AMG sports bucket seats, the diagonal braces on the underbody and the torque tube between engine and transmission consist entirely of the motorsport material carbon fibre.

Other noteworthy features include the AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission installed ten millimetres lower in order to achieve a lower centre of gravity, the newly developed, electronically controlled AMG rear-axle differential lock, updates to the AMG RIDE CONTROL performance suspension and sports tyres, and AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system

The exterior look of the SLS AMG Coupé Black Series is unmistakenly all business, sporting a rather muscular and menacing look that would get one to quickly get out-of-the-way on the freeway.

The SLS AMG Coupé Black Series sports wide flared wings at the front and the back, darkened headlamps and black surrounds for the rear lights, front and rear apron with diffuser with diffusor along with side sill panels in Black Series-specific design featuring carbon fibre-reinforced plastic front splitter, carbon inserts in the side sills and the rear apron made of carbon fibre.

The enlarged air intakes with carbon-fibre flics additionally ensure an optimum air inflow into the cooling modules at the front.

As on the SLS AMG GT3, the carbon-fibre bonnet features a central air outlet. Apart from effectively discharging the engine heat, this outlet also increases downforce at the front axle and improves the Cd value.

The rear of the SLS AMG Coupé Black Series presents a brawny appearance on a par with that of the front end. The wide wings, the striking rear diffuser, and the two sets of twin chrome tailpipes with a square cross-section provide are the predominant features.

An optional AMG Aerodynamics package will also be available to customers willing to fork out a bit more cash.
