Mercedes AMG Petronas Launches 2013 Silver Arrow

Mercedes AMG Petronas Launches 2013 Silver Arrow

The Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One Team unveiled the 2013 Formula One car, the F1 W04, earlier this week at the Jerez Circuit in Southern Spain.

Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton arrived at the official photo call at the wheel of two Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Coupé Black Series, the fifth Black Series model from Mercedes-AMG.

The new Mercedes F1 W04 has been going through a series of test this week in Jerez, in the hands of Nico and Lewis.

The 2013 Mercedes F1 W04 is an evolution of last year’s car owing to the relatively stable regulations changes from 2012 to 2013.

Led by Engineering Director Aldo Costa, under the coordination of Technical Director Bob Bell, the project commenced with initial aerodynamic testing in early summer 2012.

The aerodynamic design philosophy has been optimised around a new five-element front wing design and a second-generation Coanda exhaust at the rear. The car retains pushrod front suspension and a pullrod rear suspension, aimed at optimising tyre life and performance, while the rear end has been aggressively packaged to optimise aerodynamic development potential. The Mercedes F1 W04 also does away with the stepped nose design of its predecessor thanks to a small ‘vanity panel’, which was found to offer a small gain during aerodynamic testing. The car completed its final mandatory FIA crash test on 15 January.

Nico Rosberg is stated as having spent a significant amount of time over winter physically preparing for the season, running, climbing, biking and swimming. During this time he has also visited the team at the factory and spent some time on the simulator.

According to Nico Rosberg,“The car seems to be performing well in the virtual world but we have a very busy and intense programme ahead of us during testing to make sure we can deliver that performance on track. The atmosphere in the team is very positive and the people are highly motivated to succeed.”

Lewis Hamilton having recently joined the Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One Team is already excited abouit driving for the team. ” I’ve been at the factory for a few days now, getting to know the guys, meeting my mechanics and engineers, learning myself into the team and I have never seen a group of people that is hungrier for success than this one. They have been flat out this winter trying to pack more performance into the new car and I can’t wait to drive it and see where I can make a difference to help push the team forward with Nico.”

Well with only a few weeks left before the start of the season, we are already anticipating a very interesting season ahead.

Mercedes-Benz CLA - In a League of Its Own

Mercedes-Benz CLA – In a League of Its Own

Official word on the Mercedes-Benz CLA four-door coupe is now out. After months of viewing camouflaged pictures of the CLA, Mercedes finally decided to alleviate us of our pain and show us the final product and just in time for the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) too.

The Mercedes-Benz CLA build on or rather follows on the success of the CLS and with it’s frameless doors astonishingly closely resembles the design of the Concept Style Coupe.

We already like the styling of the new A-Class which was a welcome departure from the previous generation A-Class, and we feel that Mercedes will definitely attract a new type of buyer with the CLA. This is well alluded to by Dr Joachim Schmidt, Executive Vice President Mercedes-Benz Cars,  Sales and Marketing, who stated that “We aim to reach new target groups with the CLA – including those who never intended driving a Mercedes.”

In keeping with its sporty positioning, the CLA is available with high-torque turbo engines ranging from 90kW up to 155 kW, sports suspension and 4MATIC all-wheel drive.

The technical highlights of this new design icon include a new world record in aerodynamics for series production automobiles (Cd value: 0.22) and numerous driving assistance systems, including advanced COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST (a radar-based braking system).

Five lines and packages which vary greatly in character are available to individualise the striking compact mid-range coupé. We’ll let the pictures do the talking here.

The exterior’s progressive, sporty appearance is continued inside the vehicle where a careful pairing and selection of high quality materials leads a well-executed interior.

You know what; we’ll let the pictures do the talking here. The car just looks striking. We hope the drive is as good as the car looks. But from what we can see from the engine specs we don’t think it will be a disappointment (we hope).

The petrol engines with a displacement of 1.6 and 2.0 litres cover an output spectrum ranging from 90 kW in the CLA 180 through 115 kW in the CLA 200 to 155 kW in the CLA 250. The two diesel engines combine dynamic low-end torque with the utmost efficiency: the  CLA 200 CDI generates 100 kW, with maximum torque of 300 Nm. With a cubic capacity of 2.2 litres, the CLA 220 CDI will offer an output of 125 kW and 350 Nm of torque, emitting only 109 g CO2 per kilometre.

All the engines feature the ECO start/stop function as standard. The engines are combined with a six-speed manual transmission or with the 7G-DCT dual clutch automatic transmission, which reconciles comfort and sportiness in inimitable fashion.

In keeping with the digital lifestyle of the CLA’s social media-savvy target group, smartphones can additionally be fully integrated into the vehicle’s display and operating system.

Daimler’s Digital Drive Style app concept, which together with the Drive Kit Plus for the iPhone® enables seamless integration of the iPhone® into the vehicle, has been extended. The highlights include Siri voice control and Glympse real-time location sharing. Glympse enables the user to share his or her current location with selected persons. Other functions are Facebook®, Twitter®, internet radio, AUPEO!™ Personal Radio and the advanced navigation solution from Garmin® with web-based real-time traffic information, online special destination search including Street View™ and 3D map display.

European orders begin with immediate effect with first deliveries scheduled for April 2013. We will keep our ears to the ground for the South African launch and let you know as soon as we find out.

Pope Benedict XVI gets new Popemobile

Pope Benedict XVI gets new Popemobile

In continuation with its over 80 year tradition, Merceded-Benz yesterday delivered a new Popemobile to Pope Benedict XVI. The new popemobile was presented to Pope Benedict XVI by Dr Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars.

“It is an honour for Mercedes-Benz to be accompanying His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI on his future journeys with our new Popemobile”, said Zetsche at the handover of the new Popemobile in Rome. “As such, we are continuing our long-standing partnership with the Vatican. For more than 80 years now, Popes have been able to rely on the quality, safety and comfort of our Mercedes-Benz vehicles.”

The leader of the Catholic Church makes use of the Mercedes-Benz Popemobile at a number of public appearances both at home and abroad. It gives him the opportunity to get as close as possible to the public without having to forego the highest possible levels of safety and comfort.

Pope Benedict XVI will today make use of his new vehicle in Rome, where the Catholic Feast Day of the Immaculate Conception is traditionally celebrated at the Spanish Steps.

The Popemobile is fitted with the latest technological highlights from the current M-Class. In addition, the vehicle also features a new interior design.

Compared with the preceding model, the dome has been extended significantly, providing an improved amount of space and more convenient entry access. The view of the Pope has also been significantly enhanced thanks to considerably larger glass panels in the viewing area, together with large illuminated roof lining. The throne, the central design feature in the interior, bears the embroidered coat of arms of the Holy Father.

As with the preceding model, the body of the new Popemobile is painted in diamond white. And to facilitate frequent transport of the modified M-Class by air, Mercedes-Benz has reduced the overall height of the vehicle by a few centimetres, while at the same time improving the internal standing height.

Work on the new Popemobile began some nine months ago. The vehicle was designed and produced by Mercedes-Benz.

Building an AMG Engine! [Motor Trend Video]

Motor Trend’s Senior Features Editor Jonny Lieberman had the opportunity to go to Affalterbach, the home of AMG, to build his own twin-turbo V8 by hand. An experience I think a number of people out there wouldn’t mind doing.

Mercedes Raises Concerns Over New Aircon Refrigerant

Mercedes Raises Concerns Over New Aircon Refrigerant

New findings by Mercedes raise concerns over the use of the new aircon refrigerant R-1234yf. The aircon refrigerant R-1234yf replaces the more common R-134a used on most vehicles. R-1234yf has been deemed mandatory for use on new motor vehicles since January2011 and will be required for all motor vehicles by 2017.

The switch from R-134a to R-1234yf is predominantly due to the lower carbon dioxide footprint of the new refrigerant.

However recent findings from Mercedes show that the new R-1234yf refrigerant is flammable under certain real-life conditions. The climate-friendly R-1234yf refrigerant was previously perceived to be safe due to the numerous laboratory and crash tests carried out by a number of international vehicle manufacturers and independent institutions.

The tests performed by Mercedes went above and beyond the legally prescribed tests, and required the R-1234yf refrigerant to be dynamically dispersed at high pressure near to hot components of the test vehicle’s exhaust system. Similar tests conducted on the older refrigerant did not result in ignition.

Based on the findings Mercedes will continue to use the proven and safe R-134a refrigerant on its vehicles. Daimler has already informed the relevant authorities of these facts and will also make the results of this investigation available to all relevant associations as well as to other vehicle manufacturers.

Let’s hope a solution to the problem can be identified swiftly.
