Audi R18 e-tron Quattro Wins at Le Mans

Audi R18 e-tron Quattro Wins at Le Mans

After a weekend full of drama the Audi R18 e-tron Quattro won the 2013 Le Mans 24 hour race, its second consecutive win having won the 2012 Le Mans.

This win also signified Audi’s twelfth vicory at the Le Mans from its entry in 1999. The victory was clinched by the number ‘2’ Audi R18 e-tron Quattro driven by Loïc Duval (France), Tom Kristensen (Denmark) and Allan McNish (Scotland).

The victorious Audi R18 e-tron quattro started on pole position and ran for 24 hours without the slightest technical problem. Duval/Kristensen/McNish took the lead at 21:43 on Saturday night and would not relinquish it anymore up to triumphantly crossing the finish line at 15:00 on Sunday,

As mentioned this year’s Le Mans was filled with rain showers which came and went and which ultimately led to a number of incidents. As a consequence a total of eleven safety cars were deployed during the race.

The biggest incident was the fatal accident that occurred in the GT class that occurred shortly after the race started. The accident resulted in the death of Alan Simonsen.

As a number of teams rightly mentioned, the 90th anniversary of the Le Mans 24 Hours was overshadowed by this news. Aston Martin CEO, Dr Bez had this to say about the incident

“The tragedy in the opening hours of the race overshadowed the great performance of the Aston Martin Racing team.  I am proud of everybody for demonstrating great speed, professionalism and competitiveness right up to the end of 24th hour. This achievement is a truly fitting tribute to Allan Simonsen.”

Not to be forgotten is Toyota with their TS030. Toyota Racing achieved an emotional runners-up finish in the Le Mans 24 Hours after a rollercoaster race which saw drivers and team overcome immense challenges.

The number ‘8’ TS030 HYBRID of Anthony Davidson, Sébastien Buemi and Stéphane Sarrazin finished second while the  number ‘7’ of Alex Wurz, Nicolas Lapierre and Kazuki Nakajima completed fourth.

To be commended was the quick repair of the number ‘7’ Toyota TS030 hybrid which was damaged when it slid off the track with just over an hour to go. Nicolas Lapierre was able to drive the car back to the pits and the crew was able to repair the heavily damaged front body work and suspension within 30 minutes.

We ultimately would like to congratulate Audi for their achievements in this year’s Le Mans 24Hour race as well as all the competitors who managed to complete the race.

Nissan Juke Nismo Revealed at Le Mans

Nissan Juke Nismo Revealed at Le Mans

The production version of the Nissan Juke Nismo made its debut at the Le Mans this past weekend, alongside the Nissan Juke R and the Nissan DeltaWing. The Nissan Juke Nismo concept was unveiled at the Tokyo and Geneva Motor Show in 2011.

The choice for launching the Nissan Juke Nismo performance crossover was most likely helped by the good reception of the Nissan Juke-R which has been put into production due to demand although originally envisioned as a once-off concept.

The Juke Nismo is powered by a tuned-up version of its 1.6-litre direct injection turbocharged petrol engine, inspired by the engine fitted on the Nissan DeltaWing.

Costmetic changes include a new aerodynamics kit, which features lower front and rear bumpers, wider wings and sill side skirts, and a modified grille and tailgate spoiler which control airflow. Stylish new 18-inch alloy wheels with wider tyres offer improved grip, and further boost the Juke’s on-road presence.

The Nismo treatment continues inside the cabin, where the steering wheel, pedals, gauges, gear knob and door trims have been redesigned to boost the sporty feeling when driving. To enhance the performance personality of the car, special suede-trimmed Nismo sports seats with red stitching have been added for increased holding while cornering.

From a ride and handling perspective the Nissan Juke Nismo features stiffened suspension settings and new steering modifications for sportier direct handling and improved traction control, the new model will also be available with torque vectoring, a technology offering better grip and cornering capacity.

Andy Palmer, Executive Vice President Global Product Planning, says “The introduction of Juke Nismo further cements our dedication to provide innovation and excitement for everyone. The Juke, with its radical design and pioneering attitude, is the natural choice to be one of the first Nissan models to receive the mythical performance and distinctive design treatment from our Nismo specialists.”

If you have some time to spare watch the video below where Jerry Hardcastle, Global Chief Marketability Engineer, explains the techs and specs of some of the cars Nissan show cased at the Le Mans , from the Juke Nismo to the Nissan DeltaWing.

Historic Win for Audi R18 e-tron at Le Mans

Historic Win for Audi R18 e-tron at Le Mans

Audi this past weekend finished first, second, third and fifth position at the Le Mans 24 Hours. What makes it a historic win was Audi’s first and second place wins with the Audi R18 e-tron quattro hybrid race car. This makes Audi the first manufacturer to win the Le Mans with a hybrid vehicle.

The first place Audi R18 e-tron quattro was driven by Marcel Fässler, André Lotterer, and Benoît Tréluyer whilst the second place car was driven by Dindo Capello, Tom Kristensen and Allan McNish.

This is not the first time Audi has one the Le Mans on the first try using new technology. In 2001 Audi won the Le Mans with a turbocharged petrol engine (TFSI) and in 2006 with a diesel engine (TDI).

Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich (Head of Audi Motorsport): “This is no doubt a historic victory for Audi. We were the first to win Le Mans with a direct-injection turbo gasoline engine and the first to be successful with a diesel engine. It’s a great result that Audi is now the first brand to have achieved victory with a hybrid vehicle – and right on the first run, as before with the two other technologies, and – what’s more – with both R18 e-tron quattro cars on the two top spots.”
