VW Golf VII Named Europe's Car of The Year

VW Golf VII Named Europe’s Car of The Year

The new Golf is Europe’s “Car of the Year 2013.” The renowned international “Car of the Year” Award is deemed one of the most important barometers in the automotive industry. The winners were announced yesterday, Monday 4 March 2013 in the run-up to the Geneva Motor Show.

In his acceptance speech, Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board of Management of the Volkswagen AG, stated: “This is a superb result and we are very proud of it. This most significant European award is the perfect final touch to the list of prizes we have already won. Over 29 million customers have made the Golf into the icon that it is. The new Golf will continue this success story.”

The vote for “Car of the Year” is one of the oldest and most renowned in Europe. The best new cars have been given prizes annually since 1964. The panel of judges, consisting of 58 automotive journalists from 22 countries, nominated eight cars for the final run. The finalists were compared and evaluated during the last few months under a broad range of criteria, such as fuel efficiency, comfort, safety, driving properties, functionality, design and technological progress.

In the final vote, the new Golf came out on top with a total score of 414 points – the car in second place received a score of 202 points. Two Volkswagen models have received the coveted prize before, the Golf in 1992 and the Polo in 2010.

The most successful car in Europe has been further perfected in its seventh generation. The new Golf scored high not only with its quality, comfort, low fuel consumption and emission values as well as its excellent drive properties but also in the most vital area of safety. One of its new safety features is the standard Multi-Collision Braking System that slows the vehicle down automatically after an accident so as to reduce the remaining kinetic energy, thus avoiding more subsequent collisions.  Other safety features that are offered as standard in the new Golf include electronic XDS differential lock. These safety features offer maximum of safety and comfort at an affordable price.

The Golf’s success story is exemplary, whether as a classic five door Golf, Golf Cabriolet. It is available in all five continents and in more than 120 countries. With nearly 30 million vehicles produced, the Golf has set new standards in the compact class in the last few decades. New technologies such as ABS, the airbag and the electronic stabilisation programme were integrated and have decisively shaped automotive construction in the class named after it. The exterior and interior of the Golf are also leading the way. Like almost no other product, the Golf distinguishes itself by its unique product and design language, which is seen as timeless and classless to this very day.

The new Golf, which was launched in South Africa in last month, sold over 760 units in its first month of retail.

New Golf GTI to Make Debut in Geneva

New Golf GTI to Make Debut in Geneva

The new Volkswagen Golf GTI is set to debut at the 2013 Geneva International Motor Show following on the premier of the Golf GTI concept late last year at the Paris Motor Show.

For the first time the Golf GTI will be available in two power levels, the standard 162kW or the GTI performance with 169kW and front axle differential lock. Both GTI versions will develop 350Nm.

The sporty character of the Golf GTI is reflected in its traditional red-painted brake callipers, two chrome tailpipes and a sport suspension. The exterior of the compact sports car also scores with 17-inch “Brooklyn” GTI wheels and 225/45 size tyres, special side sills, a diffuser and smoked LED rear lights (including LED licence plate illumination).

Visual highlights in the interior are top sport seats in tartan pattern (“Clark”), a black roofliner and red ambience lighting. The cars also offers sporty GTI features such as a sport steering wheel, GTI gear shift grip and instrument cluster, special trim strips and stainless steel pedals and foot support.

The new Golf GTI may not be the most exciting performance hatch out there but we hope it will offer the same level of all round performance that we have come to expect from it. Judging from the general feedback on the new Golf VII, we think it will do just that.

The new Golf GTI will be introduced in the second half of the year in South Africa.

Details on the Volkswagen Golf R Cabriolet Revealed

Details on the Volkswagen Golf R Cabriolet Revealed

So it seems that the powers that be at Volkswagen have decided to build the Volkswagen Golf R Cabriolet. No complaints from our side. This will be the first-ever open-top R model and the fastest –ever production open-top Golf.

At the heart of the new range-topping  Golf R cabriolet is a four-cylinder 2.0-litre engine producing 195kW, connected to a standard six-speed DSG gearbox transmitting power to the front wheels.

The Golf R Cabriolet has an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph, with a claimed 0 to 100km/h sprint taking just 6.4 seconds.

Design cues on the Golf R Cabriolet include a bespoke front bumper with gloss-black grille and ‘R’ logo, LED daytime running lights, bi-xenon headlights with black housings, gloss-black door mirror casings and black-painted brake callipers with R logo.  Side sill extensions, a gloss black rear diffuser framed by chrome-tipped exhausts either side of the diffuser and smoked LED tail lights complete the look.

Bespoke ‘R’ suspension lowers the ride by 25 mm in comparison with the standard Golf Cabriolet.  Wheels are 18- or 19-inch ‘Talladega’ alloy wheels in either ‘Sterling Silver’ or optionally ‘High-gloss Black’.

The interior features four individual sports seats in ‘Vienna Cool Leather’ and ‘R’ logos in the head restraints, while the leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel, handbrake grip and gear lever all have contrasting grey stitching.  The pedals have brushed aluminium caps, while the doors and dashboard feature ‘Silver Lane’ aluminium decorative inlays.

As on all Golf Cabriolet models, the fully electric insulated hood is operated by a switch in the centre console, and can be lowered in 9.5 seconds at speeds of up to 18 mph (and raised in 11.0 seconds).

No word yet on whether the Volkswagen Golf R Cabriolet will be released for the South African market.

The New Ford Focus ST vs The VW Golf VI GTI, Which Is Better?[Video]

The New Ford Focus ST vs The VW Golf VI GTI, Which Is Better?[Video]

In this video Ken Block and Vaughn Gittin Jr. put the New Ford Focus ST against the GOlf VI GTi. The video may be a bit biased considering that Ford asked both drivers to pit the two vehicles against each other, and perhaps even more so since both drivers professionally race Ford vehicles.

However the video makes for great entertainment. We think the Ford and VW fans will be at each others throats really soon, especially since the Ford Focus ST has now been launched locally.
