We came across this video of the production process for the new 2013 Volkswagen Golf VII last week. It’s always fascinating to watch a vehicle through the build process.

This video shows the Volkswagen Golf VII, going through the body shop, paint shop, and final assembly line. All along the process checks are made to ensure the car is built according to Volkswagen standards.

The Volkswagen Golf VII will be  locally available from February 2013 with the order book opening from January 2013. For more information on the Volkswagen Golf VII read our earlier article.

The New Volkswagen Golf VII BlueMotion

The new Golf VII BlueMotion was presented at the Paris Motor Show and is touted to have a fuel consumption of just 3.2l/100km an improvement of 15% over the outgoing model and CO2 emissions 85g/km.

The Golf VII Blue Motion is powered by an 81kW 1.6 TDI diesel motor and will go on sale in Europe from mid 2013.

The fact that fuel consumption for the third Golf BlueMotion has been reduced by 0.6 litres or 15 % and CO2 emissions by 14 grams per km is a reflection of the continuous technical progress that Volkswagen has made using its Blue Motion technology. The number crunchers at Volkswagen claim that with a 50 litre fuel tank and 3.2 l/100 km fuel consumption, the new Golf will have a theoretical range of 1562 km.

Improvements in the fuel consumption of the Golf VII BlueMotion have been attained by a reduction in weight, improved aerodynamics, and the newly developed EA288 1.6 TDI engine.

Unlike other generation BlueMotion vehicles which were only offered in a single spec, the new Golf VII Blue Motion will be offered as a Trendline or Comfortline. The new Golf VII BlueMotion will also be exclusively offered with 15- and 16-inch wheels to optimize weight, aerodynamics and rolling resistance.

The equipment level spec will be similar to the rest of the new Golf VII range.

Its Official The Golf VII Has Finally Been Unveiled

The much awaited official unveiling of the Volkswagen Golf VII finally took place at a media briefing in Berlin, Germany today. The Golf VII will go on sale this coming November in Europe with the more powerful Golf GTi and Golf R being launched next year.

The Golf VII will be available in three specifications; the Trendline, Comfortline and Highline.

The Golf VII uses the MQB (Modular Transverse Matrix) platform which it currently shares with the new Audi A3 and the Seat Leon. This new platform makes it possible for VW Group vehicles using the same platform to share a number of components such as the new EA211 engines.

The new Golf VII is slated to weigh in just over 100kg less than the outgoing Golf VI, of which the Body-In-White (BIW) is 23kg lighter and overall fuel consumption and emissions reduced by 23%.

The reduced height and wider stance of the Golf Vii give the car sportier proportions as well as an added improvement in interior space.

The Golf VII is 53mm longer than the previous model and now has an overall length of 4255mm and similarly the wheel base has increased by 59mm to 2637mm. The vehicle width is 1799mm which gives the Golf VII a 13mm wider stance relative to the outgoing Golf VI. In parallel the track widths have been increased by 8 mm in front and 6 mm at the rear. These additional millimetres give the Volkswagen a fuller stance on the road. Apart from this the reduced height of the roof (reduced by 28mm to 1452mm) improves the Golf Vii aerodynamic performance.

Despite the reduced height of the Golf VII, VW claims that there is still more than adequate headroom.

Passengers in the rear seating area, in particular, can now enjoy 15 mm more knee room. Shoulder room has grown by 31 mm to 1,420 mm. Elbow room is increased by 22 mm to 1,469 mm. In the rear seating area, shoulder room has also been optimised with a 30 mm gain and elbow room increased by 20 mm.

The luggage carrying capacity on the Golf VII has also been increased by 30 litres to 380 litres. The 60: 40 split backrest that is standard on all variants can also be folded down to increase luggage space.

One of the key highlights in the interior is the sporty, driver-oriented architecture of the dashboard with a wide centre console that is oriented towards the driver.

At the middle of the centre console, beneath the hazard flasher switch, is the five- to eight-inch infotainment touchscreen (three display sizes will be available 5, 5.8 and 8-inch) with its menu keys and dials. The touchsceeens have a proximity sensor and a function that reacts to wiping movements by the fingers (wiping and zooming gestures like those of a smart phone). The touchscreen display automatically switches to operating mode as a hand approaches.

Below the infotainment system is the climate control system and further down on the centre console and to the right of the driver are the buttons for the new electronic parking brake and its Auto Hold function. Integrated in front of it is a storage compartment in which the multimedia interfaces (aux-in, USB and Apple) have been integrated. The compartment is also big enough to hold a smart phone.

Below the front centre armrest lays a large storage compartment that is also capable of storing a lot, including the optional hands free telephone system and a second fully featured USB interface that can be used for data transfer and charging.

The Golf VII will initially be launched with 1.2 and 1.4 litre TSI engines with the 1.4 TSI engine featuring Volkswagens ACT cylinder deactivation technology.

The 1.2 litre TSI engine produces 63kW and has a claimed fuel consumption of 4.9 l/100km whilst the 1.4 litre TSI develops 103kW with claimed fuel consumption figures of just 4.8 l/100km and 112 g/km CO2.

The diesel engines available at launch will be the 1.6 and 1.8 TDI engines. The 1.6 litre TDI engine develops 77kW and has a claimed fuel consumption of just 3.8 l/100 km for an emissions value of 99 g/km CO2 whilst the 1.8TDI engine develops 110kW and has a claimed fuel consumption of just 4.1 l/100km and 106 g/km CO2.

For the first time the Golf is now also being offered with a driver profile selection system to aid in efficient driving. There are a total of four – and, in combination with DCC (adaptive chassis control), five – driving modes available: Eco, Sport, Normal, Individual and, in combination with DCC, Comfort. In the Eco driving profile engine management, air conditioning and other ancillary systems are controlled such that optimum fuel consumption is achieved. In addition on vehicles with DSG when driving in Eco mode there is a ‘coasting’ function available. If a driver takes their foot off the accelerator – for example, when drawing up to traffic lights or on downhill stretches – the DSG disengages and the engine idles. As long as the driver drives appropriately, the Golf’s kinetic energy can thus be put to optimum use.

From a safety perspective the Golf VII has a plethora of safety systems aimed at protecting the lives of its passengers. The Golf VII has new safety features such as proactive occupant protection, fatigue detection, the Front Assist safety system with integrated City Emergency Braking function and a standard multi-collision braking function that can avoid one-fourth of all accidents involving personal injury.

Other than that the Golf VII also comes with ACC adaptive cruise control, Lane Assist lane-keeping assistant, traffic sign detection and the latest generation of the automatic parking assistant Park Assist including OPS (360 degree display) as well as the automated light functions Light Assist and Dynamic Light Assist.
