Ford’s New 1.0-Liter EcoBoost Engine Piles On More Awards

Ford’s New 1.0-Liter EcoBoost Engine Piles On More Awards

Ford Motor Company’s innovative 1.0-liter three-cylinder EcoBoost® engine has been honored with a Breakthrough Award from Popular Mechanics magazine.

Each year the magazine selects the 10 technology products that matter most.

Earlier this year the 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine was named “International Engine of the Year” by a jury of 76 journalists from 35 countries. The 1.0-liter engine Ecoboost is currently available in Europe in the Ford Focus, C-Max, and B-MAX models.

EcoBoost combines turbocharging, direct fuel injection and variable valve timing on both intake and exhaust to deliver the power of a larger engine with the fuel efficiency of a smaller unit.

“We placed the bar incredibly high when we set out to design this engine,” said Joe Bakaj, Ford vice president, Global Powertrain. “We wanted to deliver eye-popping fuel economy, surprising performance, quietness and refinement – and all from a very small three-cylinder engine.”

“The team responded to this seemingly impossible challenge with some really exciting innovation,” added Bakaj. “We are thrilled Popular Mechanics has recognized the 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine for a Breakthrough Award.”

Redesigned 2013 Ford Fiesta Revealed

Redesigned 2013 Ford Fiesta Revealed

The redesigned 2013 Ford Fiesta was revealed this week Wednesday a day before Ford’s special “Go Further” product event hosted by Ford President and CEO Alan Mulally in Amsterdam.

The 2013 Ford Fiesta incorporates Ford’s latest global design language, with one of the key elements being the trapezoidal front grille. Other than the exterior changes Ford has also done some work to ergonomically optimise the interior of the vehicle and has also added the Ford SYNC voice activated in-car connectivity system.

Ford SYNC in-car connectivity system delivers an unprecedented level of connectivity, enabling owners to voice-activate phone calls and music selection from devices connected via Bluetooth or USB.

The 2013 Ford Fiesta does not marke a huge departure from the current Ford Fiesta and this was evidents in comments made by Martin Smith, Ford of Europe executive design director, with regards to how vital it had been to maintain the “vital part of the Fiesta’s make-up” and still “give it a more sophisticated look.”

One of the new engine options on the 2013 Ford Fiesta will be the award winning 1.0 litre EcoBoost petrol engine which won the 2012 “International Engine of the Year.”

EcoBoost combines turbocharging, direct fuel injection and variable valve timing on both intake and exhaust to deliver the power of a larger engine with the fuel efficiency of a smaller unit.

The new Fiesta will be launched in South Africa in 2013.

New Ford Focus ST Heading To South Africa

New Ford Focus ST Heading To South Africa

The New Ford Focus ST is set to arrive in South Africa in the fourth quarter of this year, most likely November.

From an exterior point of view the main focus areas have to be the prominent one-piece trapezoidal grille with hexagonal mesh and the bold red ST badge, LED running day time lights, integrated rear roof spoiler and the centrally mounted dual pipe exhaust system eminating from the redesigned rear bumperat the rear. Well, the new Tangerine Scream signature colour which is said to match the Focus ST’s exciting and energetic character could possibly be added to this list as well, if it’s to your taste.

The new Ford Focus ST will make use of a 2.0 L four cylinder turbocharged EcoBoost engine which just so happens to be one cylinder less compared to the previous model Ford Focus ST which came equipped with a five cylinder turbo engine. However all is not at a loss as the new engine produces 12kW more compared the previous generation engine. The new Focus ST produces 184kW of power and 360 Nm of torque.

It achieves this through a combination of high pressure direct injection, low-inertia turbocharging, and Twin-independent Variable Cam Timing (Ti-VCT), as well as redesigned intake and exhaust systems, and unique calibration.

The introduction of a sound imposer in the intake helps to add character to the sound of the 2.0 L turbocharged engine which would otherwise have been muted. The sound imposer works by enriching the natural sounds of the vehicle by capturing internal engine oscillations and piping them through the interior. Although not necessarily on par with the sound of the previous generation Focus ST the Car Magazine crew claims it is still much better compared to a number of other four cylinder turbocharged engines currently on the market.

The Focust ST comes fitted with a six-speed manual transmission and uses the electric power steering in conjunction with the ESP system to cut any torque steer before it even reaches the driver. This basically eliminates the need for a mechanical diff which in previous Ford Focus St models would have necessitated the use of a limited slip diff (LSD) or the RevoKnuckle Technology.

Pricing for the New Ford Focus ST for the South African market has not yet been released.

Have a look at the two videos below for a taste of what’s to come.

Ford Fiesta ST

Ford Fiesta ST

The production ready version of the Ford Fiesta St was unveiled today at the Geneva Motor Show.

The Fiesta ST is powered by a 1.6-litre 132kW, 240Nm EcoBoost engine which happends to be 20 per cent more powerful than its predecessor. The Fiesta ST accelerates from 0-100km/h in less than seven seconds and can reach a top-speed of 220km/h-plus.

The Fiesta ST offers improved ride and handling and sits 15mm lower than the standard Fiesta.

The interior is said to host unprecedented levels of equipment and specification to suit the sporting driver, with standard Recaro sports seats appearing in a Fiesta ST for the first time.

The video below does no justice to the Ford Fiesta ST, they make the Fiesta ST seem more happier on a slow afternoon drive and honestly does nothing to enhance it’s street credentials. We hope to see more heart exhilarating  videos of the Ford Fiesta ST soon. We are sure there a number of people clambering to find out when it will be launched in South Africa.
