Audi developing e-sound for e-tron models

Audi developing e-sound for e-tron models

Audi is currently developing new sound signatures for its e-tron models. To a large extent this is governed by the need to provide audible warnings so that pedestrians and cyclists will be able to hear the near-silent EVs. According to Dr. Ralf Kunkel, Head of Acoustics at Audi, “We’ll probably have to ensure audible alerts only up to 30 km/h; above that speed, the tires generate enough noise.”

Having said that Audi aims to ensure each future Audi e-tron model will have a similar and at the same time unique synthetic sound signature.

Input for the cars e-sound will be based on data relating to the electric motor’s rotational speed, vehicle speed, loads, and other parameters continuously supplied by the vehicle to the control unit. This sound will then be broadcast from a loudspeaker attached to the car’s undercarriage. A fraction of that sound signature will also enter the vehicle’s interior via airborne and structure-borne sound waves, helping enhance the unique experience of electric driving.

The Audi R8 e-tron will be first in the e-tron range to sport the new synthetic e-sound.  According to Audi, the Audi R8 e-tron certainly sounds like a sports car, but also one-of-a-kind and very futuristic.
