The new fourth generation Honda CR-V is now on dealer floors and any customer looking for suitably sized SUV to courier the family around this holiday is in luck.

The exterior of the car has had some changes which have also aided to reduce the aerodynamics of the car by a claimed 6.5%. The new Honda CR-V has a flat under floor, longer roof line, optimised front bumper and rear spoiler, and sculptured wheel arches, all of which play a role in reducing aerodynamic drag.

The length of the vehicle has been reduced by 5mm, and the height by 30mm, yet the new vehicle offers the same amount of interior space as the outgoing model.

As per the trend in most new vehicles currently being released, LED daytime running lights, and LED tail lights have also been incorporates to the Honda CR-V.

Just in case you’re wondering, as of about February 2011 all new vehicles in Europe have been required to have daytime running lights, as per UNECE Regulation no 87, so it’s just not a styling gimmick.

The interior of the Honda CR-V has been designed to create a quiet, refined and relaxed ambiance. This is evident by the reduced engine and road noise transmitted to the cabin through air and structural transfer paths.

With the rear seats folded flat, the boot capacity of the CR-V has grown by to 1,146 litres with the seats folded down, or 589 litres with the seats in place.

The load length has been increased by 140 mm to 1570 mm, while the height of the load lip has been reduced by 30mm to make it easier to load heavy or awkward items. The boot of the CR-V can now accommodate two mountain bikes or four sets of golf clubs.

The new Honda CR-V will be offered in six derivatives, with the Honda CR-V 2.0 Comfort being added to the mix.

In an effort to improved ride and handling on the new Honda CR-V the car’s suspension, steering and four-wheel drive system also received some upgrades.

The two-wheel drive 2.0 Comfort represents the entry-level, and is followed by the all-wheel drive version of the same vehicle.

The front-wheel drive version is equipped with a six-speed manual transmission whilst the all-wheel drive version has a five-speed automatic. Both variants are powered by the same 1997 cc i-VTEC, 16-valve, in-line 4 cylinder petrol engine, which offers 114 kW of power at 6500 rpm; and 192 Nm of torque at 4300 rpm.

Two further petrol models are offered in the range, namely the 2.4 Elegance and the 2.4 Executive. Both of these models come with 5-Speed Automatic transmissions, and they share the i-VTEC, 16-Valve, in-line, 4 cylinder petrol engine with a cubic capacity of 2354 cc. This highly refined petrol engine has 140 kW of power available at 7000 rpm; and 220 Nm of torque at 4300 rpm.

The final two models in the new CR-V line-up are both powered by Honda’s acclaimed 2.2 litre i-DTEC common rail turbo diesel engine, which sports four cylinders and 16 valves. The 2.2 Elegance and 2.2 Exclusive are both all-wheel-drive, and are available with a choice of 6-Speed Manual or 5-Speed Automatic transmissions. The i-DTEC engine has 110 kW of power available at 4000 rpm, and 350 Nm of torque between 2000 and 2750 rpm.
