Mercedes CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake

Mercedes CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake

Mercedes released information on its new CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake a few days ago and we have to admit that we like it a lot. But then again we need to point out that we’ve been fans of the CLS since it was first launched globally in 2004 so we could be biased, well that and the fact that we generally love the sonorous sound of the 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine.

Just like the Mercedes CLS did in 2004, the CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake is also seen as a first in terms of “establishing a completely new, small and select niche sector,” according to Ola Källenius, Chairman of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. The CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake fills the gap for individuals wanting an executive size sports coupe with an added level of practicality. This is revealed by the generous interior and luggage compartment size with a volume of up to 1550 litres.

The AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine mated to the the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission serves out power output and torque levels of 386 kW and 700 Nm respectively, with the Edition 1 package offering up power output and torque levels of 410 kW and 800 Nm respectively. Both variants offer driving performance of the highest calibre: accelerating from zero to 100 kph takes 4.4 and 4.3 seconds respectively, and the top speed is electronically limited to 250 kph.

Despite the superb power offered by the engine the fuel consumption figures are claimed to be 10.1 litres per 100 kilometres according to the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC). These relatively low fuel consumption figures are partly possible due to the use of an electromechanical AMG sports parameter steering which only draws power when the vehicle is actually being steered.

The ride and handling of the car has not been ignored either and the CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake comes fitted with the AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension, which allows the driver to choose between 3 suspension modes of “Comfort”, “Sport” and “Sport plus” at the press of a button. The 3-stage -ESP® with SPORT Handling mode also enables three individual control strategies to be selected at the press of a button.

Some of the notable elements on the exterior styling of the CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake include the AMG front apron with cross strut finished in high-gloss black, the AMG radiator grille with single slat and the AMG-specific design of the bonnet. Whilst at the AMG-specific rear apron with diffuser look and the AMG sports exhaust system with two chrome twin tailpipes add some level of dynamism to the rear of the car.

Okay so it has all the AMG trademark exterior and interior features. So what really stands out for us out of all the extensive range of optional extras? It’s the designo wooden luggage compartment floor. This luggage compartment floor is made of open-pore American cherry wood, a decorative fine wood traditionally used in superior interior design work, high-quality furniture and exclusive ship outfitting applications. The rubber inserts incorporated in the floor, not only help to protect the wooden floor but also feature anti-slip properties which help make the luggage space more usable. The floors look lovely but were not sure as yet what that will set you back, but then again to be considering the purchase of such a car money can’t be such a big issue right?
