New Audi RS6 Avant: Improved Performance, Lighter and More Efficient

New Audi RS6 Avant: Improved Performance, Lighter and More Efficient

We saw the launch of the Audi RS4 Avant earlier this year and now the Audi RS6 Avant has officially been unveiled. The Audi RS4 has already won the hearts of Audi fans and the video we saw of Chris Harris test driving the Audi RS4 Avant just made us want one even more.

Reduction in weight on the new Audi RS6 Avant, 100Kg lighter than the predecessor, leads to an improved power-to-weight ratio as well as improved handling.

As per vehicles with the RS badge, the Audi RS6 Avant comes with RS-specific design details which give the Avant a very distinctive appearance. Most noticeable are the matte aluminium applications on the body, the high-gloss black protective grille at the front of the car, the bumpers, the fender, sill flares and the large roof spoiler. At the rear of the car, the diffuser and the two large, elliptical exhaust tailpipes make a bold statement.

Other than the standard trim owners will also be able to choose from two optional appearance packages, Matt Aluminium or Carbon, as well as choose from additional options from the exclusive range.

The sporty interior of the Audi RS6 Avant is tailored to provide an overall excellent driving experience, with detailing which seems to make one want to exact the full potential of the car, even on a simple run to the grocery store.

RS logos are splashed over the key, the three spoke multifunctional steering wheel, the illuminated entry sills, the tachometer and the displays for the MMI as well as the Driver Information System (DIS).

Keeping occupants well positioned in the car are the RS Sports seats with pronounced side bolsters, and integrated head restraints.. The rear seats of the Audi RS6 Avant come standard with two sportily molded rear seats although a more traditional three person bench seat is also available as an option.

The new Audi RS6 Avant comes endowed with the 4.0 litre TFSI engine which debuted last year. The 4.0 litre twin turbo V8 delivers 412kW between 5700rpm and 6700rpm, with a constant torque of 700Nm available from between 1750rpm and 5500rpm. All of this is done whilst maintaining a claimed fuel consumption figure of 9.8l/100km, a reduction of 40% when compared to the previous model.

The 4.0 litre TFSI delivers a sporty full-throttled below, helped in part by the switchable flaps on the exhaust system.

The Audi RS6 can sprint to 100km/h in a claimed 3.9 seconds and in standard configuration is limited to a max speed of 250km/h. With the Dynamic package the Audi RS6 Avant is limited to 280km/h and further to 305km/h when the Dynamic Plus package is chosen.

The 4.0 litre TFSI is paired to an eight-speed triptronic featuring shortened shift times. Gear changes can be executed by using the shift paddles or the gear lever selector, which sports a unique RS design.

Ride on the Audi RS6 Avant is not compromised as the RS6 Avant comes standard with a specifically tuned adaptive air suspension. The adaptive air suspension can lower the car by 20mm.

Audi also offer s the tauter sport suspension plus with Dynamic Ride Control as an alternative to the Audi RS6 Avant adaptive air suspension. This system uses steel springs and three-way adjustable shock absorbers that are interconnected diagonally by means of oil lines and a central valve for improved body roll stability.

Uncompromised braking comes from four internally vented brake discs. The front discs measure 390mm in diameter and are gripped by black, six-piston callipers. Customers can also opt for red brake callipers as well as carbon finbre-ceramic brake discs measuring 420mm in diameter.

Transferring the power to the road are high-gloss, 20” forged wheels in a seven twin-spoke design. Optional 21” cast wheels are available in three versions: high-gloss silver, polished black and polished titanium-look.

The new Audi RS6 Avant comes with a generous list of standard equipment as well as optional equipment which should keep potential owners with the potentially difficult task of deciding what to leave out.

2013 Audi RS4 Avant

2013 Audi RS4 Avant

The new generation Audi RS4 Avant was revealed last week at the Geneva Motor Show.

The RS4 Avant is powered by 4.2 liter V8engine, similar to that on the Audi RS5, producing 331Kw at 8,250 rpm with a maximum torque of 430Nm.  The RS4 Avant accelerates  from zero to 100km/h in a claimed 4.7 seconds.

The 4.2 litre engine is coupled to a 7-speed S tronic gearbox and a four wheel drive quattro system which typically sends 60 percent of its power to the rear axle and 40 to the front. This split can change to as much as 80 percent to the rear axle and 60 percent to the front axle depending on road conditions. All of which ensures complete stability and traction whatever the situation.

According to Carmag, the RS4 Avant will be introduced in South Africa in early 2013.
