BMW today released information on the front wheel drive BMW Concept Active Tourer which up to now most people had speculated would be called the BMW 1 Series GT. The BMW Concept Active Tourer will be showcased at the upcoming 2012 Paris Motor Show.

BMW feels that the introduction of the model will bolster its sales within the small compact premium segment which it sees growing by5% over the next coming years.

According to BMW, the BMW Concept Active Tourer is geared towards customers of the premium segment who appreciate a high level of comfort, a raised seating position and a generous amount of space.

Styling wise the BMW Concept Active Tourer exudes a sporty elegance and retains the characteristically expressive BMW design language that we have come to know. In a way it seems to be a good blend of the current 1 and X1 Series models as well as a more toned down incorporation of the i3 and i8 design cues. Based on what we can see the interior design has been optimised to ensure an unusually generously sized interior.

The BMW Concept Active Tourer is a plug in hybrid (PHEV) and features BMW’s proprietary eDrive system which has already been showcased in the BMW i8.

A state-of-the-art 1.5-litre petrol engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology derived from the BMW Group Efficient Dynamics family of engines mates to a synchronous electric motor.

Were not sure how BMW fans will take a front wheel drive Beemer, although we have to point out that it is a bit of a misnomer in that with the 1.5 litre petrol engines powering the front wheels, the synchronous motor when active actually acts on the rear axles and recoups braking energy through brake regeneration.

The combined system output is claimed to be over 140kW which leads the BMW Concept Active Tourer to accelerate from 0-100km/h in less than 8 seconds reaching a maximum speed of around 200km/h. These impressive figures are attained whilst maintaining a claimed average fuel consumption of 2.5L/100km, with CO2 emission levels of 60g/km.

With a fully charged battery, the BMW Concept Active Tourer has a maximum range of over 30 kilometres when running on electric power alone.

Interior highlights of the BMW Concept Active Tourer include the innovative panorama sunroof which can be darkened or lightened at the press of an electric button. The levels of lighting are attained by adding a leaf type effect to the glass roof.

Other items include the 10.25-inch integrated multifunction instrument display and the 8-inch central information display in with a Black Panel look.

We hope BMW captures the interest of the buyers they are targeting, something we don’t foreseeably see as being a problem.
