Land Rover Freelander Gets an Overhaul

The Land Rover Freelander 2 recently received an overhaul, which has led to improved comfort, convenience and driving enjoyment, or so says the team at Land Rover.

The Freelander 2 will be available in new derivatives, colours, exterior design features, upgraded equipment levels and continued choice of diesel engines.

The Freelander 2 will be available in three derivatives, the HSE, SE, Dynamic SE and S Derivatives.

Additions to the interior level spec include a brand new centre console, 7-inch colour touch-screen with enhanced audio systems from Meridian™, passive start, rear view camera compatibility (standard on HSE derivative), satellite navigation and the ‘Say What You See’ voice activation system with visual prompts (standard on HSE).

The new ‘Say What You See’ voice activation system will prompt the driver visually with the commands he or she needs to speak in order to control functions in the audio, satellite navigation, climate and phone systems. This system comes as part of the satellite navigation system.

Other interior features include the intelligent electric parking brake which adjusts brake force according to the slop the vehicle is parked on.

The new Dynamic derivative will also offer a choice of three new interior colours, Ebony, Ivory or Pimento, each with matching stitching and coordinated door casings to complete the look.

The exterior changes mainly include the more contemporary lights at the rear using the latest LED technology and a new LED signature graphic in the front running lights. The grille and fog lamp bezels now sport a bright finish and there are paint detailing changes to the front grille surround, insert bars and fender vent.

The engine line-up of the Freelander 2 also sees some changes. The 3.2l Si6 has been replaced by the 2.0 l Si4 engine which also powers the Range Rover Evoque. The 2.0l Si4 turbocharged engine has a power output of 177kW which it produces at 5500rpm and torque output of 340Nm at 1750 rpm.

In the Freelander 2 this engine is capable of accelerating to 100km/h in 8.8 seconds and on to 200km/h while at the same time achieving a claimed 9.6l/100km on the EU combined cycle and CO2 emissions of 224g/km

The other engine options include the 2.2 litre 110kW TD4 with 420Nm of torque, and the 2.2 litre 140kW SD4 with 420Nm.

To aid with fuel efficiency every Freelander 2 comes with Land Rover’s Intelligent Power System Management (IPSM) which includes Smart Regenerative Charging. This system works by charging the vehicle battery during deceleration, recovering kinetic energy rather than consuming fuel.

Pricing for the Freelander 2 is as follows:

Land Rover Freelander 2 SE – from R495 200
