Opel Adam Unveiled!

The Opel Adam launched last week is seen by Opel as a fashionable urban car which slots into the A segment car market. With that the Opel Adam has virtually endless styling options, which makes almost every different Opel Adam unique.

It seems the proliferation of styling options available on cars is a sign that people want to individualise their cars more and more and just shows to what lengths vehicle manufacturers are going to satisfy niche customer segments.

The Opel Adam is set to premier at the Paris Motor Show later this year (September 29 – October 14, 2012).

Owing to its size, almost 3.7 metres in length, the Opel Adam is claimed to be agile in urban environments and considering its size is capable of seating 4 people with a level of roominess.

The Opel ADAM will initially be offered with three efficient petrol engines; 1.2 litre 51kW engine, 1.4 litre 64 kW engine and a 1.4 litre 74kW engine, combined with a five-speed manual transmission. All models will be available with an ecoFLEX technology pack including fuel-saving Start/Stop technology. In the future a new generation small gasoline engine will make its premiere in the Opel ADAM, featuring direct injection turbocharging for further enhanced efficiency and performance. This new engine will be combined with a completely new generation six-speed manual transmission.

Customers will be able to choose from three different highly individualized vehicle trims, Adam Jam, Adam Glam, and Adam Slam. According to Opel, JAM is unconventional, fashionable and colorful, GLAM offers a more elegant, refined and sophisticated setting and SLAM appeals to those with energetic and sporty attitudes. These different trims will include a wide choice of exterior colors, three roof colors, different interior colors, decors and various headliners -including an LED lit “starlight” roof trim – and other premium inspired distinctive design elements.

With regards to the exterior styling of the Opel Adam, the wide front grille has the new wing-shaped chrome bar with the embossed Opel emblem as introduced in the new Astra line-up. The headlamps feature wing-shaped daytime running lights (DRL) and for the first time in the A-segment, both the headlamps and the taillights are available with state-of-the art energy-saving LED technology.

From an infotainment perspective the Opel Adam  will be the first car with Opel’s all new state of the art infotainment system that will integrates the owner’s smartphone (Android and Apple iOS) with the car and will thereby make internet based applications available in the cabin.

Some of the other features available on the Opel Adam will include and Advanced Park System (APA II), Side Blind Spot Alert (SBSA) which uses ultrasonic sensors, heated steering wheel, Electric Power Steering (EPS), ESP, Hill Start Assist and front, side and head curtain airbags as well as Dual Seat Belt Pre-tensioners at the front seats which offer additional knee and leg protection.

First cars are expected in show room floors in January 2013.

Let us wait and see if GM brings this car in to South Africa to add to the Opel model lineup locally. Chances are that all the options available for other markets may not be available for South Africa but I hope we are pleasantly surprised.
