I’m filled with nostalgic feelings every time I think about Datsun, especially since many of those memories are of speeding on the freeway with my uncle behind the wheel trying to get to our destination as swiftly as possible. So when I heard that Carlos-Ghosn had made an announcement that Nissan would resurrect the Datsun brand I was ecstatic.
The only problem I had was that the announcement was that they will be bringing Datsun in as a budget car brand, however in the same breath one has to remember that a lot of the Datsun line up was absorbed into Nissan so all is not lost.
Nissan is reviving the Datsun brand to increase sales in emerging markets with the initial key focus being India, Indonesia and Russia where Datsun aims to launch its car in 2014.
Carlos Ghosn’s “objective is to make sure that the person who today has a motorcycle or a used car and wants to buy a new car is going to consider Datsun.” Nissan currently sees its offerings in these high growth markets as Zero and as such the relaunch of Datsun will give them an opportunity to compete and increase their market share.
